A Red, Red RoseO my luve’s like a red, red rose,That's newly sprung in June;

O my luve’s like the melodie

That's sweetly play’d in tune.As fair art thou, my bonie la,So deep in luve am I;

And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a' the seas gang dry.Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,And the rocks melt wi' the sun;

And I will luve thee still , my dear, While the sands o' life shall run.And fare thee weel, my only luve,And fare thee weel a while!

And I will come again, my luve,Tho'it wre ten thousand mile!

A Red, Red Rose is a poem written by Robert Burns, one of the greatest romanticist poet in the late 18th century, based on a traditional Scottish song.It has been popular since its appearance and enjoys enduring love and praise from all over the world.Numberous are Burns songs of love and frienship, which describes poet’s own emotion with such vividne and simplicity that thay appeal directly to the reader’s heart.These songs , meanwhile, carry with them a new spirite of Romanticism, which would prevail as the main trend of English literature in the 19th century.①

1.On the Phonological Markers The most outstanding feature of the poem is the rhythm.The poem is in the metrical form of balled stanza.The sound pattern is very jolly with the rheme ‘June’ and ‘tune’, ‘ I’ and ‘ dry’, ‘sun’ and ‘run’,’while’ and ‘mile’.Excpt for these, the application of the alliteration, aonance,such as ‘luve’and ‘like’, ‘red’ and ‘rose’ in the first line, ‘weel’ and ‘while’ in the 14th line, and the ‘come’ and ‘love’ in the 15th line,strengthen the rhythm.Besides, the vowels, such as [ai], [i:], [e], [u:], are used a lot in the poem.Obviously, the pronunciation of the vowels is much more full.It enhances the ambience of sweet and warm lovene.Besides, the long vowels and the diphthongs takes long time to read, which will slow the reading speed down, meanwhile, help readers to feel the deep love that the writer wants to expre.For the sake of the sound effect, the poet omitted some sound to make more fluent to read such as ‘a’ ’ ‘wi’ ’ ‘o’ ‘tho’ ’.Also, he omitted some words, in the last sentence, ‘come again’ actually should be ‘come back again’.2.On the Syntactic Markers It is commom that the sentences of poems are not complete and the sentence order is confused.However, the situation dosen’t appear in this poem.Clearly, sentences in this poem are all complete and in the normal order except one sentence: “so deep in love am I ”.But why? In my opinion, this inversion “so deep in love am I ” is used to stre the deep and paionate emotion and love of the poet, as it is easy to understand and plesant to read aloud, to expre the port’s strong and deep emotion.What’ more, the word ‘luve’ repeatedly appears in the poem seven times, though it respectively resprents the nons ‘lover’, ‘love’ and the verb ‘love’.The word ‘luve’ overlaps again and again, which actually means that the poet’s strong emotion of love deepen gradually.In Leech's view, “although repetition

of linguistic recource, it can have its own kind of eloquence.By underlining rather than elaborating the meage, it presents a simple emotion with force.It may further suggest a suppreed intensity of feeling an imprisoned feeling, as it were, for which there is no outlet but a repeat⁃ ed hammering at the confining walls of language.In a way, saying the same thing over and over is a reflection on the inadequacy of language ot epre what you have to expre ”in one go“.②

3.On the Graphological Markers A Red,Red Rose can be divided into four paragraphs.In the first paragraph, the poet showed us a beautiful girl pleasently and proudly.In the second and the third paragraph, the poet directly expreed his deep and paionate love step by step.Even the world was destoryed, his love still exist.In the last paragraph, the poet uses two exclaimation marks to strengthen his adamant will to be with his lover.4.On the Lexical Markers The poem was written in Scottish dialect and in traditional of Scottish folk songs.The word ‘luve ’, ‘bonie la’, ‘gang’ is the Scottish dialect for ‘love ’, ‘beautiful girl’, and ‘go’.In my view, the poet used the Scottish dialect, on the one hand, because of his living experience;on the other hand, it showed that he was quite sincere facing the one he loved.He did not pretend that he was someone or try to conceal his shortcomings.He tried to expose a true Burns in front of his love.From another perspective, the repetition of the word ‘red’ is quite different from the phrase ‘a red rose’.A ‘red, red rose’ was not an ordinary rose.It painted a brightly colored flower with fresh smell and moving look.The pedals of the rose were so perfect that they all had no flaws.The roses were ‘newly sprung’ in the June.When we read this sentence, we almost see the whole proce of the bloom of the flower.Then, in the second section, the poet compared it to the beautiful melody, which gave us the sense of listening.The whole picture described by the poet bacame an dynamic one.It is so vivid and touching that we can even feel the excite of the poet.His love was so great and detailed.The word ‘fair’ originally refers to the refined skin of the girls.But as the language of poem follos the rules of compreion, in our imagination, the fair lady shhould not only be beautiful but also temperamentally charming.I the last stanza, he use ‘fare thee well’ to replace the normal expreion ‘farewell’.According to my understanding, he broke the one word into two, on one hand, it was phonetically longer;at the same time, it showed his unwillingne to say goodbye to his love.He hoped that he could stay with his lover one more minute and then another.From this angle, we can understand why he uses ‘my dear’ in the former stanzas but ”my only luve“ here.”only“ means more than the mere one love of the poet.Generally speaking, the only one must be the most valuable and cherished one.The ”only" conveyed the poet's reluctance to leave.③ At last, I have to mention the sentences impre me most--Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,And the rocks melt wi' the sun.This sentence has the same meaning with a Chinese poem—山无棱,江水为竭,冬雷震震,夏雨雪,天地合,乃敢与君绝.④ It gives us Chinese more imagination of the poet’s deep and eternal love.The analysis of A Red Red Rose is on the angle of stlistics, based on a superficial understanding of the poem and the Stylistics.In many places, it needs to be corrected systematically.Referance: ① A Short History of English Literature.河南人民出版社, 2007 ② Geofferey N.Leech A Linguistic Guide to English Poetry[M].Foreign Language Teaching and Research Pre,2001.③ 王莉.Overseas English, 2012 ④《先秦汉魏晋南北朝诗 汉鼓吹曲辞 上邪》
