The real life

——A reflection after reading Walden I read an article about Henry David Thoreau(1817-1862)who was born in Concord, Maachusetts when I was in senior high school and got to know that he had wrote a masterpiece called Walden.Since then, I have been interested in it.However, there was no time available to read it and I’ve finally finished reading it recently. It is not easy. Before I read this book, I imagined that the book must be composed by colorful and ornamental language. But when I began to read this book, I found that what the author wrote is simply trivial things in daily life and the words are plain and some are even awkward to read, which made me bored and confused. However, gradually, the book turned out to be interesting.I was attracted by fascinating landscape of Walden and the hills and impreed by Thoreau’s attitude and thoughts.I can’t tear myself away from it.I know the truth of real life through this book. The book Walden is the famous book that mainly talks about Thoreau’s life and thoughts during his days living in the woods. It was written under specific social background. The age when he lived had witneed the flourish of capitalism as well as the prosperity of industrialization and urbanization.During the 19th century, the American economy developed at so fast rate that most people were bound up in pursuing the material satisfaction and ignored the spiritual life to a great extent.Thoreau distinguished himself from others through his maverick thoughts. He disdained the modern civilization and attached more importance to the spirit than the material. He strongly objected luxuries and comfortable life, as he mentioned in his book “most of luxuries, and many of the so-called comforts of life, are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind”.In order to prove that people can also live a happy life without the modern instruments, in 1845, he moved into a cabin on the shore of Walden Pond and lived there alone for over two years to enjoy the beauty of nature. After reading the book, what impreed me most is the description of the fascinating scenery around the Walden pound, especially these sentences: “A lake is

the landscape's most beautiful and expreive feature. It is earth's eye;looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature. The trees next the shore are the slender eyelashes which fringe it, and the wooded hills and cliffs around are its overhanging brows”.As for Thoreau, the Walden Pond is like a charming and melting girl, who has slender eyelashes and likes to dre herself in different beautiful clothes with the changes of different seasons.Thoreau was so happy with the life living near the lake of Walden that he felt it a sweet grace to have the nature' accompany and even the sounds of rain and the sights around his house were full of sincere friendship. In his eyes, the nature was an intimate friend of him and all things in the nature were lively and vivacious. And all kinds of animals in the wood, such as field mice, robins and wild rabbits were amicably treated and regarded as his adorable companions. He even thought that plants were also had the right to live equal with human beings.I was shocked at those words because I had never met a man who treats nature as his beloved.Thoreau's though of enjoying a simple life has a more realistic significance and have become a valuable spiritual wealth in our modern society. With the development of the material civilization, people's desires are swelling limitlely and many people are busy with the pursuit of wealth and luxurious life by any means, including at the expense of nature. However, even in the society materially affluent and technologically advanced, people are not be more happier than those people who lived centuries ago, but even feel le satisfactory and complaint more about their present life as a result of having unbounded desires of getting more and better. Therefore, many people who poe a lat have become slaves of machine, working more but do not have the ability to enjoy what they have. Those people spend the best part of their lives earning money in order to enjoy a questionable liberty during the least valuable part of them.In the book Walden, Thoreau had realize this problem several hundreds ago. Thus, he set his mind to give enlightenment to awake people and encourage them to live a simple life. His thoughts have great similarity with the belief of our Chinese humanism, that is, the meaning of life lies in the sane and healthy enjoyment of a

simple life.In fact, Thoreau and his teacher and friend Emerson praised highly on Confucianism and both them benefited a lot from it.I was baptized by this book, and I feel my faith in a resurrection and immortality. It is true that a quiet mind may live as contentedly in a shabby house, and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace.Don’t trouble ourselves much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. The most important point is that, we should always keep our thoughts and enjoy life in time.
