leading transcendentalist,Walden is his masterpiece which is a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings.First published in 1854, Walden details Thoreau's experiences over the course of two years, two months, and two days in a cabin he built near Walden Pond, amidst woodland owned by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson, near Concord, Maachusetts.Thoreau comprees the time into a single calendar year and uses paages of four seasons to symbolize human development.By immersing him in nature, Thoreau hoped to gain a more objective understanding of society through personal introspection. With the purposeto live a life of self-reliant both economically and interpersonally, his life in WaldenPond was a “report of an experiment in transcendental pastoralism” which based on his teacher, Emerson's “method of nature”.ii.Writing background of Walden Waldenwas writtenin thefirst half of nineteenth Century whenthe United States underits initial stage of the transition from the agricultural age to the industrial age. With theadvancement of industrialization, people chase after wealth became mainstream and hedonism has dominant position.Wealth has become the only goal of people's life that the laboring man has not leisure for a true integrity day by day, they cannot afford to sustain the manliest relations to men. They have no time to be anything but a machine. In this book, Thoreau emphasizes to criticize human being become the machine of industry and take his action to seek to simplify his lifestyle constantly: he patches his clothes rather than buy new ones;he minimizes his consumer activity, and relies on leisure time and on himself for everything.iii.My review of this book.It was three years ago, I first touched Waldenwhen I cannot continue to read it for some reasons. In the next two years I have kept on picking up this book, however, my progre of it always fail to move forwardpreface, even it is Chinses version. To my delight, I have read its original version carefully and thoroughly in all details this semester.Meanwhile I feel so regretful that I haven’t read Waldenin my freshman year for its significant and profound meaning to guide us in this rustle and hustle society.Everything is hard in the beginning with no exception of the reading of Walden, since it was written in an older prose, which uses surgically precise language, extended, allegorical metaphors, long and complex paragraphs and sentences.Such as “to stand on the meeting of two eternities, the past and future, which is precisely the present moment;to toe that line.” in chapter 1 Economy, it is hard to understand for a Chinese reader like me so that I have to come to by the means of Chinese version. And Thoreau use a lot of metaphors, allusions, understatement, hyperbole, personification, irony, satire, metonymy, synecdoche, and oxymorons, and he always shift from a scientific to a transcendental point of view in midsentence.Second, its logic is based on a different understanding of life, quite contrary to what most people would call common sense. That is the major reason why I cannot go on reading it in my freshman year since it is far beyond my life experiences and storage of knowledges, especially the transcendental thoughts. And third, the whole book is conveying usa kind of philosophical thinking which is inquired tranquility of mind and our critical thinking when we are doing reading, otherwise we won’t attain anything after reading.Gladly,I was interested by a vivid picture of the landscape for Walden Pond, around Concord and its custom and peopleoffered by Thoreau. His specific description of the natural surroundings like “this small lake was of most value as a neighbor in the intervals of a gentle rain storm in August, when both air and water being perfectly still, but the sky overcast, mid-afternoon had all the serenity of evening and the wood thrush sang around, and was heard from shore to shore.” in chapter 2 Where I lived, and what I lived for, was so descriptive that I felt as if I were there. And it makes me delighted to overcome the obscure sentences in the book to keep on reading.iv.Something I have leant from this book.Initially, books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations;consequently we should keep a habit of reading to inherit this kind of legacies left by genius.Secondly, “what old people say you cannot do,you try and find that you can.Old deeds for old people, and new deeds for new.”This quotation is meaningful for Chinese nation who has taken filial piety as the most important of all virtues that we are inclined to obey the older without any creation. Finally, what is most important isto live deep and suck out all the marrow of life in your serenity heart, never lose your way in noisy world.
