Reflections of Tales of Two Cities
Reading the original version of English literature is really a big challenge to me,especially those which were written in literary language. Therefore,I tried to get the general information of the chosen book first by reading the Chinese introduction.Attracted by the beginning language used in Tales of Two Cities,I made up my mind to finish that book. It’s really a great task, but worthy. The author of Tales of Two Cities is a renowned English writer Charles Dickens, who was born in Portsmouth in the south of English in 1812.His family was arrested for debt. And he had to drop out of school to make money. When he was thirteen, his father was released. Then he came back to school for just two years. Before he was twenty,he had been a copyist in law offices,a stenographer in law courts and a free newsperson for parliament activities, and won a reputation in a small group of people.Though Dickens’s received limited education because of the poor family background,he persisted in learning by himself. He kept the habit of reading both in his childhood and after working.Though self-learning,not only did he make a firm literary foundation, but also developed the strong interest and plentiful imagination of literature, which were good for his later literary creation. What’s more,he contacted with his society closely and extensively with the benefit of his early vocation, such as in the courts and parliament,so that he got a chance to have insight into the problems of society. It’s not difficult to find that in his books he not only mercilely castigates those social problems, but also intends to find a way of solving them. And there’s no exception to Tales of Two Cities.Tales of Two Cities was written in 1859.The two cities are Pairs and London in the historical background of the French Revolution.Dickens made the most of the big event in this book to spread his thoughts of benevolence. On one hand,he hoped that the English governors could draw a leon from its neighborhood France to avoid any revolutions happening in England. On the other hand,he streed the terrible influence on the society made by the revolution he streed the terrible influence on the society made by the revolution in spite that the French Revolution overthrew the cruel ruling cla.Tales of Two Cities can be divided into three parts. The story is developed with the writing of flashback. In the first part,it tells that Lorry,a clerk in a bank in London takes a young lady Lucie to Pairs to meet her father Manette who she thought dead for a long time.Doctor Manette loses his mind after 18 years in the Bastille. They reunion and return to London, and Manette does nothing but makes shoes. In the second part,it tells how old hatred turns into kind love. The
doctor Manette permits her daughter’s marriage with his enemy——the son of Evrèmonde’s family.A lawyer’s aistant Carton also loves Lucie, but he at last gives up for auring her happy life. However, the same victim Madame Defarge turned her hatred deeper and deeper by knitting conspiracy of killing all Evrèmonde’s family, including the kind Charles Darney, his wife Lucie and their child. In the third part,it tells how all the evil oppreors will die at last. The hatcher of the conspiracy Madame Defarge is killed by her own gun in a fight with the just Mi Pro.Thanks to the similar physical appearance between Darney and Carton who all love Lucie truly,Carton volunteers to offer his life to save Darney who should be put to death by guillotine. The structure of this book is clear and novel. The characters of every role in this book are distinguishable and representative.I’m impred by one of the roles Carton and the problems revealed from this book.Let me develop them as follows.First, how to give a just conclusion on a person’s character? From this book, kindne can generally describe the Lucie’s family, including her father Manette, her husband Darney and her maid Mi Pro.Cruelty can describe the oppreors and revengers, such as Marquis Evrèmonde and Madame Defarge. It’s easy to judge their characters because they think and act in one and the same way. However,Carton’s enter and ending are totally different. At the beginning,he said that he doesn’t care about anybody and nobody cares about him.He is so indolent,self-indulgent and a alcoholic.I can see his peimist and inferiority. And I wonder it’s Lucie’s luck not to marry him until he sacrifices his life to save Lucie’s family. As Dickens put it that Carton is brilliant and emotional but doesn’t know how to turn his merits into happine, and that indulging himself makes him worn out by knowing its danger. Therefore, the strong contrast shows his love is unselfish, dedicated, platonism and cavalier. In short,it’s unwise to judge a person’s character just by outside. The inner heart can be more important.Second, every stage of a society has its historical problems. And I believe that the times produce their heroes.Take a panoramic view of Dickens’s works,he is always trying to expose the evil side of the society andto find a way out. Then the result is that the new oppreors will take place of the old,but the new will be finally wiped out.The penetrating thought is that only the benevolence and tolerance produced by self-endurance and self-sacrifice can aure a permanent harmony and happine. So we can see the scene that the greatly benevolent soul of Carton goes up to heaven, while the Madame Defarge with her full-hatred and evil heart goes down to hell. How about our society?Of course I cannot write a book to point out which cla is better,or what the fundamental problems are.All I can do
is to take some examples to see the visible spots. The existence of underworld groups and default rules means the peace and harmony is just on the surface. The hot topics about, how the Young Pioneers support the old acro the road or whether should we help the old stand up,mean our moral standards are vague now. However,no matter how bad a society seems, its heroes will come out.And the truth will exist forever that the just will overcome the evil at last.At last,I want to talk about literature. In this book,Tales of Two Cities, the author uses many kinds of figures of speech, such as simile, quotation, antiphrasis, repetition and pun, which makes the language vivid and impreive.Especially, the parallelism(the thirteen “I see...”)used in the end of the novel leadsa person to endle aftertastes and strengthens the main idea that all the people who believes in me will never die.To make a work effective,it must cater to the readers, even lighten them. And Tales of Two Cities Does it.I can’t help thinking the 2012 Nobel Laureate in Literature,Mr.Mo Yan.Before this,he seems not popular with my generation. Its influence is limited. However,a clamate told me that all books written by Mo Yan in library were borrowed during those days.I think it’s funny in some sense. It proves something. So I raise a question. What should a great book be like?I believe the time will answer it.Come back to my book report, all in all,Tales of Two Cities is worthy of reading over and over again, and its thoughts will last in my mind and guide my action in reality. What’s more,it spurs me on to read more books of Dickens’s time and to think deeper and deeper.
