Abstract: This is an article mainly deals with the competition between Edward’s two nephews.It talks about the plot as well as the book report.What’s more, it also contains the deep analysis of the major five characters.Though those three parts, we will have a more clear understanding toward the whole story.Plot: The seventh key is a short play which has been divide into five scenes.It's such a vivid story that mainly talk about how and what Edward's tow nephews do in order to inherit his uncle's whole poeions.In this story, Only Nicholas or Alan who found out the seventh key can he take away his uncle's whole treasure.But it remains a hard way to reach the final point for the only clue Edward left for them was just a piece of tape recorder.With deep trying and with Betty’s help, Alan got the final triumph.Book report：During these five scenes, Nicholas and Alan had a hot
competition.And after reading this book, we do also really get a lot from it.First, only always keep calm and be optimistic when we meet troubles.Alan's final succe war truly coming from his calmne.While he faced those unhappy things ,He wasn't being complaining about it or simply giving it up.He did calm down and work more hard until he find the last key.Second, we ought to learn to cooperate with others in this competitive world.And a man’s achievements are largely relying on a qualified wife.One cannot get out of a struck easily by her or him self alone.If Nicholas didn’t be busy to arguing with Martha while Alan and Betty were being working together to find the keys, they might won't be defeated..Third, we'd better change our attitude in a positive way and always rely on ourselves but not to others when we are in front of those unpleasant things.As the old sayings goes“ it's our attitude not our aptitude that determined our altitude.”We can't deny that, to some extent, Nicholas and Martha do be smart.But if they hadn't used their wisdoms to play tricks and only want to steal Alan's finding, they might have found the last key.This is really a wonderful book which worth our reading.After having a look about it, I can understand the sayings“ No pains, no
gains” more clearly.I do believe that with courage wisdom, and confidence, I can reach all my goals in my life.Character Analysis Edward
Edward is the uncle of Nicholas and Alan.In this play, he is a dying person.He has a large amount of property and he is going to pa it on one of his nephew.He only appears in the first part and in the first scene.But from those short parts, we can know that he is a clever and lovely old man.When Martha is rude, he is also impolite to her, while he loves Betty for her politene.He is the man who creates the competition to search the seven keys.Old Edward loves his careers, so he is trying to find the suitable person to help him to deal with his newspaper.He is not willing to see it’s falling down even when he dies.He is such a careful and thoughtful man.Martha
From the very beginning till the end, we can easily find that Martha is a total selfish woman.All she cares is how to get the keys and get Edward’s treasures.First, in part one, when she and Nicholas are required to wait in Edward’s house, she has no any
more patience when the fixed time is reaching.All her words with Nicholas suggest her unreasonable.She would never forgive the lawyer’s being late.At the same time, we an find that she has a good understanding about her husband.As Nicholas’s wife, it’s Martha than Nicholas who has a voice in their home.To some extent, this is Nicholas tragedy.And according to Edward’s words, we see he doesn’t think Martha as a qualified wife.He doesn’t like her.After several times’s shouting at her, he is angry about her.To a response, Martha is not so respectable her uncle so much.Her words and her behavior are sharp and rude.Then, in the following parts, in the keys competition, her method is just after Alan and Betty.She is such a tricking woman.But her selfishne also show she is smart.We can’t deny that this is a good way which can save them much time and efforts.We say “No pains, no gains”, so her final failure is doomed.She dose used her wit in a wrong way.Nicholas
Nicholas is Martha’s husband.Compared with others in this play, he is somehow a yes-man.He doesn’t have his own judgments toward those tasks.During the whole competition, he has no creative opinions at all.The only thing he did is to count on his wife.Even when he knows that just by following the tracks of Alan and
Betty would never allow them to find the keys, but he doesn’t revolt it.He is really a lazy man.He doesn’t realize that without paying efforts he could reach nothing.From the part one, we can find he is also a liar.When Martha asks him whether he is sleeping, he says no directly, though he actually did.We see his attitude to his uncle is some what soft.While Edward is sleeping, he doesn’t want to wake him up and doesn’t want to see his uncle’s dying.From this, he may be a qualified nephew.What’s more, his forgivene to the lawyer shows he is not an unreasonable like his wife.But his marriage with Martha, to some extent, is a tragedy for him.Alan
Alan is Betty’s husband.He is one of Edward‘s nephew and he haven’t seen his uncle for a long time.At the first scene, we can gue t hat he is a kind and thoughtful man.Polite as he is, through his words and behavior, for instance, he does feel sorry when he is being late and he pulls the blanket up to make his uncle comfortable.While Martha and Nicholas are always holding opposite opinions toward things, he gets a humorous standing with Betty.Everything he does, he would ask his wife’s views, he and Betty know each other clearly and they do have a perfect cooperation.From here we see he is a reliable husband.He is not a
self-concentrate man.He has his own opinions toward things.His creative as well as fruitful brain leads him to a right direction toward the succe.We say there isn’t a smooth sailing in this world.So sometimes he may also puzzled about those tough problems.He may become calm le he and he is worried about the failure.He is eager to know what Nicholas has already got.But with his wife’s help, he can always keep calm later.From part three to part five, he could frequently prose some questions to Betty.This show in his heart, Betty is a good girl friend.He is quiet sure that he can count on her.He is a man with wonderful thought and he knows the right way to do the right things.Though his and Betty’s hard working, he final gets what he is expected to get.Maybe from the later video, we can find that in Edward’s mind, the final victory would certainly be Alan’s.He is a reliable person to take a good are of his newspaper.Betty
Betty is Alan’s wife.Compared with Martha, she is a polite, kind-hearted, smart, confident and thorough woman.She is welcomed by Alan’s uncle.At the beginning, she appears polite.In Edward’s eyes, she is such a qualified wife to Alan.When Uncle Edward paed away, being not acting like Martha’s indifferent, and
she accompanied him till the last minutes.When it is time to search the key, she behaves active.Together with Alan, she can always analyze all the things patiently.She never tries to give it up.She knows there is no royal road to the final succe.The only way to find the last key is to work hard and fight with all the tough problems.From the whole progre of finding the keys, we see that she is a knowledgeable woman.She has a good knowing about those rare things.We cannot deny her smartne.She has the ability to make all troublesome matters get easy.It seems there is a clear clue in her mind and will be disturbed by nothing.She knows that all she and Alan need to do is to go ahead and step by step.For her, he who laughs last laughs best.We may find that at the last part, when she realizes Martha’s tricks, she uses a clever way to defeat they two.This may suggest that she is a careful woman.She is rather a wife full of useful views than merely know how to copy others achievements and life.Her personalities determine her final bright future with Alan.The whole competition may seem to be Nicholas and Alan’s, but actually it is Betty and Martha’s.We say“Bad deeds, as well as good, may redound the doer.”, so her final triumph is also doomed.
