Specific analysis of his virtues in Autobiography
Humility
“Imagining it maybe equally agreeable to you to know the circumstances of my Life---”
He was so humble, even if he spoke to his son.The underlined implies that Franklin treated his son equally and respected his son.It is really rare for a father to manage it.In reality, most parents always consider themselves superior, because they are elders, we are younger generations. They always take it for granted that they can command their children “you should do that, you should do this” without any discuion.“From the poverty and obscurity in which I was born and in which I paed my earliest years, I have raised myself to a state of affluence and some degree of celebrity in the world.”
He was so modest in front of people that he used “a state of
affluence” rather than “ I’m rich”, “some degree of celebrity” instead of “I’m famous”.As a matter of fact, we all know he was a great
entrepreneur and regarded as the father of America.Self-reflection
“It was not fair in me to take this advantage, and this I therefore reckon one of the first errata of my life.”
As we all know, his brother treated him badly, Franklin described it as “harsh and tyrannical treatment”.When Franklin searched for freedom by taking advantage of the new indentures signed between he and his brother, he felt it unfair, and reckoned it as his first errata.“Perhaps I was too saucy and provoking.”
At the same time, he continued to reflect himself “why my brother treated me so baldly? Whether am I too naughty and annoying?”We can hardly imagine that Franklin would reflect himself and criticize himself first when faced with unfairne. In our daily life, hardly can people do like him, we always find faults on others. In our mind, we may often think that “This time isn’t my problem, somebody is to be blamed.” In my opinion, not to mention who makes mistakes, at first, we should self-exam, which part of responsibility should we take, and whether we did our duty?
Self-reliance
When he was pushed out by his brother, he made his decision to leave although he was only 17.Then after his hard work, he later had his own printing shop, and became an excellent entrepreneur. All his succe should owe to his spirit of self-reliance.Since seventeen years old, he had started to learn making a living, supporting himself, and studying with a hard life.Kindne
“In our way a drunken Dutchman, who was a paenger, too, fell overboard;when he was sinking, I reached through the water to his shock pate and drew him up so that we got him in again.”
“...and be filled with one of my rolls, gave the other two to a woman and her child that came down the river in the boat with us and were waiting to go farther.”
He was so kind that he helped many people on the way to
Philadelphia. He saved a drunken Dutchman who fell overboard. He was so generous to give two of the three rolls of him to a woman with a child, although his pocket was almost empty. To be honest, if I were him, I won't give them all the rest, at most one of the rest two, since I must consider myself first.Industry
Franklin only accepted two years education in school, but he never gave up reading and learning. He always saved money from his board wages for buying books.Since he made acquaintance with some
apprentices working in bookshops, he found out a way to reading more books. That is borrowing books secretly at night, and doing readings the whole night, then returning them in the morning. In our history, there was a man boring a hole on the walls to making use of the neighbour’s light to study. If we all study from the both, next Franklin will appear soon after.Resolution
He had a fever and the journey was still tough, some regret touched him, but he still made up his mind to proceed.Once starting, never
stopping.Don't forget he was only seventeen. When we were at his age,we could not imagine that we would live a life by ourselves since then, we would not get family's concern when having a fever.Even today, I often feel sad and homesick when getting ill without mother’s consideration beside the bed.Maybe I’m still a child. Not gaining extra advantages by unfair means
When he was waiting for the ship to Burlington in an old woman’s house, the old woman gave him a dinner of ox cheek with great goodwill, Franklin gave her a pot of ale for return. When he had little money left, he insisted on paying for his paage. From these cases, it seems that he is too generous. In fact, he had little money, even could hardly fill his stomach. But it can be judged that no matter how poor he was, he still sticked to his principle and belief.Feelings about Benjamin Franklin's succe and his virtuesIt is said that when he was young, he was not humble but proud, only after getting some leons did he learn how to get along well with others.Benjamin Franklin once placed each of the thirteen virtues on a separate page in a little book which he carried with him more than fifty years. Each day he evaluated his performance.Every week he selected one of the virtues as a point of special focus, concentrating his attention on the selected trait for seven days. There is a saying goes that one's succe can not be separated from his or her virtues.Obviously, what Franklin achieved is closely linked with his noble virtues. If he were not self-reliant, he should not walk out from his home and achieve succe in many ways.If he were not diligent, he should not read so much books, and we would lose a brilliant writer. If he did not poe the thirteen virtues, there were no Benjamin Franklin who is known to the world.Personal qualities are of great importance, to say the least they can determine one’s fate.We should learn from Benjamin Franklin. We
should often reflect ourselves and find out the shortcomings, then try our best to improve ourselves.
