Les Miserables is representative works of Victor Hugo, as one of the most famous novels in the French literature.Hugo displays a strong sense of humanistic and philosophical beliefs in the novel through his “multifaceted hero,” Jean Valjean.Humanism refers to it that people have right to live free and equal life and they should encourage the spread of mercy and fraternity.Humanism also advocates people to solve the punishments of crime with he forgivene and education. This novel condemns the inferior law of capital so that the convict repeated committing crimes, while the humanism is the supreme law that can make convict stop committing crimes and turn a new leaf.Jean Valjean was protagonist in Les Miserables.Only because he stolen a piece of bread, he was arrested and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. He was tried to escape the prison several times but failed.Worsen then, he was punished to serve 19 years imprisonments. What he had suffered from made him get inexorable and cold.He admitted that he was not innocent of the crime, but he was reluctant to break the law due to there was no work opportunities offered him while he was willing to work. However, the law punished him so heavy. He thought not only the society was unequal, but God also was guilty and he saw everything with
hatred at the prison.Just like this, his spirit was struggling at dark, and humanity and kindne were gradually fade away.Thankfully, when Jean Valjean’s spirit almost fell into the hell, he met a merciful bishop who gave him respect and brought hope to this les miserables. The bishop used his mercy and love to change Jean Valjean, so Jean Valjean can find his lost conscience and kindne. When he became major, he cared for his citizens and tried his best to help the poor. What all he did can show the effects of humanism that the bishop gave his kindne and love for Jean Valjean and then Jean Valjean paed down it to others, so the fire of humanism can be spread in les miserables. As the bishop said to Jean Valjean, “ my brother, you no longer blong to evil, but to good.It is you soul that I buy from you;I withdraw it from black thoughts and the spirit of destruction, and I give it to God.” This statement reflects the nature of the bishop’s generosity and his wish for Valjean's reform.Although he is a man of God, he believes that Jean
Valjean has goodne within him that can bring him into the light.Author Kathryn M.Groman makes a comment that the awakening of conscience is the greatne of soul. The humanism of this novel reflects people’s pursuit to kindne and mercy. To some degree, humanism has the colour of idealism, but there is no doubt that it plays a great role in helping people to return good for evil.
