Nurturing creativity Good afternoon, everyone.Today, I’m going to talk about nurturing creativity.I’d like to begin with a simple question.“What will happen when snow melts?” Do you have any answers? It was a question in a quiz of a primary school. It’s a common knowledge that snow diolves into water. And we even know water evaporates into steam. However, surprisingly, there was an answer given by a little child.——“Spring! It’s spring! When snow melts it comes spring.”

At the very start, I thought the child must be a little poet, but on second thought, I found that everyone can be a poet.Art originates from life.In real life, everyone has urges to tell stories, expre opinions and pour forth feelings, which is the impulsion of creation. The love for life is an indispensable part in the proce of creation. And when I say love, I mean loving life just like a child.Only when we combine our life experience with childlike innocence, we can love life purely without any sophistication, we can love life extensively, deeply and enduringly, and we can love life with the ability to imagine and the courage to create. Our beloved life has a nature of dream. And owing to this, the notion that the emotions in the works come directly from real life and the works are personal biography of the artist or the author is a widespread mistake.Mozart was down-and-out in his late years, but at the same time;he composed Jupiter Symphony, which was filled with optimistic heroic spirit. He showed us what does the love for life means for a great artist. And also, it is beyond imagination that if any work is created without inspiration.Inspiration, as is widely recognized, is the core of creation. The Romans called the disembodied creative spirit a genius. The genius is like a mysterious godde who loves unexpected visits, who comes and goes of her own free will. Now that the genius can never expect to meet, is that means artists should wait until it comes to them in an unexpected moment? Hegel said in Aesthetics that the greatest man of genius lies on the gra for days and days. When there comes the breeze, he looks into the blue sky. However, tender inspiration never comes. The genius does be mysterious, but it does not mean the completion of the works all depends on the contingency.Obviously, efforts of will cannot force the house elf to come out, but it prepares for the visit of the elf.The important point is that how can the artists get rid of the distraction of chance and subjectivity. This kind of preparation will sometimes be extremely suffering, that’s why creative people acro all genres, as Elizabeth Gilbert had said, have reputation for being enormously mentally unstable.Provided that an artist is employed to create a mural, and the employer finds the artist doesn’t throw himself into work immediately and actively.Instead, he does nothing, just idles away his time. The employer should not get annoyed, actually, he should not do anything but waiting in patience. In fact, the undisciplined appearance draws the curtain on artist’s nervousne and anxiety. He is clear about the truth that he doesn’t know where to start, he can do nothing but waiting as well. He’s waiting for an unexpected moment, searching for a genius, and looking forward to the visit of inspiration. He’s waiting, he’s seeking, he’s insisting. And finally, it comes the stirring moment! At that kind of moments, most artists, if not all, can hardly wait to take down the sparks for ideas.Every stroke, every letter, and every punctuation is rushed out in no hesitation and with no doubt. Some people have completely accepted this notion that creativity and suffering are somehow inherently linked and that artistry, in the end, will always ultimately lead to anguish.Yet I, on the contrary, believe that creativity and happine is more closely aociated with each other than creativity and suffering.Children always have instinct of curiosity to everything;they climb with dogs, talk to trees, and taste their toes as if they’re as delicious as French fries. If you love life like a child, as you love it more, you will get more power for creativity.Because only at that time, artists are admittedly grown up, but still retains commendable children’s simplicity. This is, in a sense, true maturity, different from sophistication and worldline. That’s where the creativity comes.Though there might be suffering, nervousne, anxiety and depreion, we should keep in mind that all sparks are not accidental luck but inevitable fortune. As long as you love life, experience life, and enjoy life, while you are endeavoring, an elf called genius will come and peep at you in a corner, hoping to get into chat with you. Some elves may be outgoing and paionate, others maybe a little shy or timid.Just wait!Do you think it is suffering? Let me put in another way. There is an ambiguous period before every romance. In that period, you will hesitate, you will suffer from uncertainty, and you will be swayed by consideration of lo and gain. Some girls may even ask themselves again, again and again. Is he attracted to me? Does he like me? Does he love me? It is exactly what the artists feel during the long time of waiting. And so it is the sweetest period of creation.Remember!Wait, search, and insist. The moment the genius comes up with you, you will be the happiest in the world.Thank you!
