Left-behind Children

February 25,2008, a 12-year-old boy named Zhang Yangyu who left behind by his parents, leaving a shocking suicide note in his pocket:when you leave(referring to his parents), I feel very sad.And that’s why I choose to commit suicide.Today, I will focus on the seriousne and causes of the problem of left-behind children.In China, there is a generation of left-behind children, who are growing up without one or both parents.A recent survey from the All-China women’s Federation found that there are some 61 million left-behind children in China, accounting for 21.9% of all nationwide---a population larger than that of combination of California and New york city.Most of these children are raised by their elderly grandparents or other relatives.Chinese grandparents are more likely to spoil children, of which many are illiterate and cannot help with homework.Therefore, there is no home education to speak of.Besides, children grow up in such environment without parental love.This may cause mental problems, such as depreion, low self-esteem, self-sealing, impulsion and so on.There are two reasons accounting for left-behind children.Firstly, economic development among regions are unbalanced.People in poor areas have to go to wealthy cities in search of better paid jobs.This forces hundreds of millions migrant parents away from their impoverished hometowns and leave their children at hometowns.Secondly, Anton Chekhov once said the joy and happine of our lives are not in money.However, many migrant parents believe that they are fulfilling their duties to children as long as they send money to pay for children’s food, clothing, housing, schooling and other expenses.Therefore, these families only reunite a few days each year.Just like the 12-year-old kid we talked about in the beginning, there are countle left-behind children in our country.The children are the hope of our families, the flowers of our country, the leaders of our future.Now, it’s time to take actions.And I

hope one day there is not even one left-behind children in China.
