Croing Cultures Critical Incident #2
The Pushy Bus Paenger
Peter was happy to run into Hongjun again. It was just Peter’s second week in China and he was still trying to make some friends, so it made him feel good when Hongjun remembered meeting him in the library and even remembered Peter’s name. This time, they ran into each other at the bus stop.Hongjun asked Peter where he was going and Peter replied he was heading downtown to buy some supplies at the store.Hongjun was on his way to meet a friend and although he could’ve taken many buses, he told Peter that he would wait with him and take the same bus.The two waited at the stop for quite some time(as some other buses going to Hongjun’s stop came and went)and made small talk—they talked about the weather and how Peter was getting along in his claes and such. When the bus finally came, Hongjun first got on and swiped his card twice. He told Peter not to pay, that he had already done it.Peter seemed a bit confused and then tried to give the one yuan note to Hongjun.Hongjun refused, but Peter tried again.Hongjun grabbed Peter’s hand and held it tightly saying that he didn’t need to pay him.Peter felt a bit weird and didn’t like Hongjun’s aggreivene, but he was really shocked by what Hongjun did next. There was only one seat open on the bus and Hongjun offered it to Peter.Peter replied that he didn’t want to sit, that he would just stand.Hongjun again told Peter to sit down, but Peter just shook his head and said he didn’t feel tired.Hongjun then put his hand on Peter’s shoulder and began to push him into the seat while saying that really he should sit.Peter, not wanting to make a scene on the bus, finally gave in to Hongjun and sat, but he really didn’t want to.He almost seemed scared that Hongjun forced him to sit. Finally, it came to the stop where Hongjun was to get off.He said bye to Peter and Peter replied, but as soon as Hongjun was gone, Peter stood up and took a deep breath, glad that his “friend” had left.Questions for discuion: What actions did Hongjun do that Peter misunderstood? What should have Hongjun done? What should have Peter done? Whose responsibility was it to know the correct way to act?
