Hello everyone, today i’m gonna introduce you one of the greatest writers in human history, that is, William Shakespeare. My introduction will involve these four parts: his life, plays, his critical reputation, and some of his most claic sayings. The picture shown on the screen is believed to be Shakespeare’s Birthplace--He was born in this house on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 23 ,1564.His father was an alderman and a succeful glover, and his mother was the daughter of an affluent landowning farmer. In fact, records about Shakespeare's early life has retained very little, but we have learned some most important pieces about his youth. At the age of 18, Shakespeare married the 26-year-old Anne Hathaway.Shakespeare has three children: the first daughter Susanna was born six months after the marriage, and the twins, son Hamnet and daughter Judith, followed almost two years later and were baptised 2 February 1585.After the birth of the twins, Shakespeare left few historical traces until he is mentioned as part of the London theatre scene in 1592.Scholars refer to the years between 1585 and 1592 as Shakespeare's “lost years”.Many of us only know that Shakespeare was a playwright, but in fact, Shakespeare has had a quite rich life experience.Actually, it is believed that his career may have begun any time from the mid-1580s.He was also a succeful investor.the Lord Chamberlain's Men that soon became the leading playing company in London, the Global Theatre, the Blackfriars indoor theatre made him wealthy that he bought several houses in Stratford.()And the picture now showed on the screen is the rebuilt Global Theatre, which was originally bulit by a partnership of company members including Shakespeare on the south bank of the River Thames.Beside the achivements mentioned above, the most well-known identity of Shakespeare is the writer of a large number of outstanding literary works. The first recorded works of Shakespeare are Richard III and the three parts of Henry VI.These plays both belong to the category of historical play, which were based on real historical events. And the picture you can see now is a picture of the main page of the first edition of Shakespeare's Richard III.In the 1590 age, In 1588, after defeated the Armada Invincible of Spain, British became the oceanic king in Western europe. This lead to Shakespeare’s turning to comedies.Plays written in this period showed bright, optimistic style. The most famous four comedies he wrote are all completed in this period of time. The first one is “A Midsummer Night's dream”, which depicts a series of stories surrounding Duke Theseus and Hippolyta's wedding. His next famous comedy was The Merchant of Venice, the theme of which is to sing the praises of kindheartedne, friendship and love. The title As You Like It of the third comedy indicates that kind people all get reward, lovers all got married, whereas wicked people all stop doing harm. This reflects Shakespeare’s ideal world of good over evil.“Twelfth Night” is the end of Shakespeare's early comedies. The hero of the story hide his identity, which leads to a lot of jokes. This comedy is considered to be one of the most outstanding comedy of Shakespeare. After the lyrical Richard II, written almost entirely in verse, his characters become more complex and tender as he switches deftly between comic and serious scenes, prose and poetry, and achieves the narrative variety of his mature work. This period begins and ends with two tragedies: Romeo and Juliet, which I believe is the most well known piece of work of Shakespeare in China, the famous romantic tragedy of sexually charged adolescence, love, and death;and Julius Caesar—based on Sir Thomas North's 1579 translation of Plutarch'sParallel Lives—which introduced a new kind of drama. In the early 17th century, Shakespeare wrote a number of his best known tragedies.()The hero of one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies, Hamlet, has probably been discued more than any other Shakespearean character, especially for his famous soliloquywhich begins “To be or not to be;that is the question”.Unlike the introverted Hamlet, whose fatal flaw is hesitation, the heroes of the tragedies that followed, Othello and King Lear, are undone by hasty errors of judgement. The plots of Shakespeare's tragedies often hinge on such fatal errors or flaws, which overturn order and destroy the hero and those he loves. In Othello, the villain Iago stokes Othello's sexual jealousy to the point where he murders the innocent wife who loves him.In King Lear, the old king commits the tragic error of giving up his powers, initiating the events which lead to the torture and blinding of the Earl of Gloucester and the murder of Lear's youngest daughter Cordelia. In Macbeth, the shortest and most compreed of Shakespeare's tragedies, uncontrollable ambition incites Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth, to murder the rightful king and usurp the throne, until their own guilt destroys them in turn.(可以念幻灯片)In his final period, Shakespeare turned to romance or tragicomedy and completed three more major plays: Cymbeline, The Winter's Tale and The Tempest, as well as the collaboration, Pericles, Prince of Tyre.Le bleak than the tragedies, these four plays are graver in tone than the comedies of the 1590s, but they end with reconciliation and the forgivene of potentially tragic errors. After introducing main styles and most famous plays of Shakespeare, I would like to introduce Shakespeare's claic quotes to all of you.The first sentence, I believe we all have heard:......This line, from the just mentioned “Hamlett”, is one of the most claical soliloquy of the hesitant hero.Next sentences from a more familiar story: “Romeo and Juliet”:......, I believe these sentences reflects the perplexing relationships between the protagonists, and the firm love which does not shake because of family opposition. Finally, a series of concise and comprehensive of the sentence, these short powerful utterances shows the author's deep thought and superior ability of using language.Shakespeare has a wide range of influences in many aspects.First and foremost, Shakespeare's work has made a lasting impreion on later theatre and literature. In particular, he expanded the dramatic potential of characterisation, plot, language, and genre. For example, soliloquies, which is when the actor say the lines alone on the stage, had been used mainly to convey information about characters or events;but Shakespeare used them to explore characters' minds.Besides, Shakespeare also influenced novelists such as Thomas Hardy, William Faulkner, and Charles Dickens.Despite facets of literature, Shakespeare also influenced other types of art.Scholars have identified 20,000 pieces of music linked to Shakespeare's works, which of course include a lot of operas based on Shakespeare’s plays.Shakespeare has also inspired many painters, including the Romantics and the Pre-Raphaelites.Last but not least, his writing sentences themselves have had a profound influence on the later generations. In Shakespeare's day, English grammar, spelling and pronunciation were le standardised than they are now, and his use of language helped shape modern English. These are all the facts about Shakespeare I want to introduce to you today, hope you enjoyed it, and can be inspired to know more about Shakespeare and his work.Thank you!
