Peter Pan—the Little Hero

James Matthew Barrie(1904),Peter Pan, 中国书籍出版社，北京Recently，I have just covered the whole book Peter Pan，which was written by

James Bally, a famous English novelist.The story is about the striking adventures of a

group of children on a magical island.In the story, two main characters are involved:

Peter Pan and Windy.Windy is from a family of five members.Besides her beautiful mother and her

stubborn father, she has two little brothers named Joan and Michael.Not enjoying

enough care from their parents, especially their father, the three innocent children

don’t feel happy in their home, so they always dream about flying in the air some day,getting rid of the boring life in their family.Then in a dark night, a mysterious boy appears.He is Peter Pan who can fly

freely in the air and never grows up.He arrives at the children’s window, teaches

them to fly, and then they all fly away from the window.After a very long journey,Peter takes them to an island full of magic—Neverland.After they arrive, they are deeply attracted by the beautiful scenery there.There

being thickset woods, beautiful flowers, and many funny things that are rarely seen

in their original home, they do have a good time then.Perhaps the greatest pleasure

for these children is that they can have the freedom to do what they want, without

any control from their parents.However, there are many savage Indians as well

as vicious pirates ruled by James Hook, a quite evil person.Under the leadership of

Peter, the children prepare themselves to fight with those bad guys most of the time,while they enjoy themselves very much when enemies are away.Gradually, they

become braver and braver.Away from home for quite a long period of time, the children all mi

their parents very much and expect to go home.Thoughvery reluctant to

part with them, Peter decides to help them leave the island.In the fierce fight,they work hand in glove and finally defeat those pirates.Peter becomes the

captain and Windy flies home with her brothers.Since then, they begin to go

separate.When reaching home, the three children find the window of their room still open.Their parents have always been waiting for them to return since they leave, aware that they should have given their children more care.So the family from then on reunites and leaves a happy life.Gradually, Windy, as well as her two brothers, grows up and nearly forgets all that is related to Peter Pan and Nerverland.However, that doesn’t mean the end of the story.Years later, Windy becomes a mother.And one night, Peter Pan, still a little boy with his first teeth, comes to her little daughter’s window…

After going through the book, I am deeply struck by the little hero Peter Pan, just as anyone else who knows this story.I like Peter, like his characteristics.As a typical character of the innocent boys, Peter is mischievous, brave and proud.He is afraid of growing up;he refuses to gain knowledge;he is willing to take adventures;he is always ready to help others.Though having many shortcomings, he is still loved by everyone because of his purity and kindne from his inner world.And maybe there is another important reason, that is, he is the symbol of youth, because he never grows up, he can fly freely in the sky, and he can enjoy his wonderful childhood forever.I gue nobody will be reluctant to have that kind of youth which will never fade away.However, Peter actually doesn’t live so enviable a life.He deserves our envy to some extent, of course, but his situation should also call up our sympathy for him.After reading his story, I began to think about this: Why does Peter invite so many children about his age to Neverland and why does he respect Windy more than others? Neverland is the place where Peter lives, together with a spirit.After a long time there, without any relatives or friends, he begins to feel lonely, so he decides to seek some peers to share his life.He is eager for others’ love, which might make him a little happier.However, children of his age usually don’t know how to show love to others, neither does he.Thus, he seems to be a person who wants to be loved but doesn’t love others.Until the day when Windy appears on the island.She is a thoughtful girl who always wants to be a good mother.So she shows her love and care to Peter and other

innocent boys generously, preparing delicious food for them, doing all the household chores for them, and mending the clothes for them.Together with her, Peter feels the subtle love he has always longed for, something as a mother does for her children.Maybe that is why Peter is so respectful for Windy.When we are at the same age of Peter Pan, what are we used to doing? Requiring our mother to buy us more chocolate? Asking our father to allow us more toys? Or just insisting that we should have more pocket money? If there is no parental love, what difference will it make? Then we must have encountered many difficulties that make us helple in life.However, Peter has to face such a situation.He has to suffer the endle loneline without his parents’ care, even a little from anyone else.What a pitiful boy he is!“I originally thought that mum would be waiting for me with the window open, so I strolled outside for two months, another two months, then another.Then I flied home.As I reached home, however, I found that the window had been closed.Mum had forgotten me completely.And there had been a little baby in my bed.” When I read this, I had quite complex feelings in my mind.Just as Windy, and her brothers, and all the children who follow Peter, flying to the faraway island, many of us have such an innocent dream to live a solitary life free from parental control when we are in our childhood.We always consider that the adults are powerful and can do what they want freely, so we are eager to grow up soon.We begin to do things just as adults, reluctant to be considered as a child.That is also why Windy tries to behave like a mother when on the island.However, we can hardly manage the complex affairs well all by ourselves at such a young age.After all, children have little experience, either physically or psychologically, it is the critical period when we need parental care, restriction and instruction.So I do hope that one day the window of Peter’s room can be open, allowing the poor little boy a happy family life.He is supposed to enjoy parental love instead of hanging around outside, suffering the bitterne alone.As a conclusion, I’d like to talk about the mysterious island.Neverland represents the dream place in children’s imagination.In that magical place, there are lovely spirits, beautiful mermaids, evil pirates, so on and so forth;in that place, children live

freely and happily;in that place, there are wars between children and bad forces.All these reflect the happy memories of childhood.Childhood is the most beautiful musical movement.It is a precious treasure of life and should be cherished for a whole lifetime.
