Environmental Deterioration Nowadays, with the rapid economic development, current cities are expanding and new cities are mounting at a staggering rate.A myriad of problems spring up in urbanization, though it has exerted some favorable impacts on our society.Due to human’s ill demeanor and loopholes of supervisory systems, one iue stands out---environmental deterioration.For starters, urbanization diminishes biodiversity.As urbanization speeds up, plenty of factories have mushroomed around the cities.Under the slackly supervised system, the air and water are contaminated by exceive emiions of industrial waste, automobile exhaust, household garbage and the like.Those animals and plants that can not adapt to the changed environment gradually die out, thus biodiversity dwindling.Besides, urbanization spawns “heat island effect”.Heat islands are formed when vegetation or open soil are reduced in urban areas.In rural areas, the ground helps regulate temperature by evaporating water in vegetation or soil.The evaporation, in turn, has cooling effect.However, in urban regions, the majority of solar energy is absorbed by buildings and asphalt.Therefore, cities experience higher surface temperature.Coupled with that is the city heat given off by vehicles and factories, as well as indoor cooling units.Altogether, the city temperature can be raised by 1 to 6 degrees Celsius.Also, urbanization takes a toll on environment in many other aspects.Those problems induced by urbanization are closely linked to our life.We can not afford to ignore.Aeschylus, a renounced Greek poet, once said: “The last drop of human will be tears of remorse after environmental damage”.Hence it is high time that efforts should be made to improve the deteriorated environment.To meet this goal, the government and the general public should work together to ameliorate the environment.
