Good morning, distinguished profeors and teachers, thank you for attending the oral defense.I am Jiyulong from B English 082.First and foremost, I would like to expre my sincere gratitude to my supervisor, profeor Wanghongmei, for her intellectual guidance, invaluable instructions and comments on my thesis.It is with her valuable aistance that I have finally accomplished this thesis.I choose this topic due to the following reasons.The Catcher in the Rye is Salinger’s only long novel, also is an autobiographic novel.This novel owns a kind of autobiographic characteristic of the author’s experience as a youngster.And the character of the novel Holden Caulfied’s experience is quite similar with the author experience as a youngster.I hope to make a research on the autobiographic color in The Catcher in the Rye to show the author's negative attitude of escaping the reality.My topic is On the Autobiographic Color in The Catcher in the Rye.The whole thesis consists of 5 parts.The first part will give a brief introduction of the novel.The second part is going to analyze the novel’s background to show the creating environment of the author and the novel, including the economic background and the mental background.The economic background is mainly about the rapid development of American economy after the Second World War because of the government’s positive policy.People lived a very rich life after War.But under the pre of McCarthyism, people’s mental world became empty.Most people lost confidence in their society.This also affects Salinger’s creating.In the third part, a comparison between the author and the hero in the Catcher in the Rye will be further discued, which consists of three parts, including similar educational experience, life attitude and social ideal.The first one, similar educational experience, their school environments are similar, and they all don’t want to get along with their clamates.What more, their scores at school are all very bad.The character Holden is even discharged by four schools.The author Salinger gets only one diploma in his lifetime.About the similar life attitude, they all want to
leave far away from the reality.And about the similar social ideal, Holden wants to leave the hypocritical adult world and goes into the childhood world.He wants to be the catcher in the rye to protect childhood world from being influenced by the adult world.Also, the author Salinger wants to leave the public to live a retired life because that he doesn’t want to be influenced by the reality world.And the fourth part is to talk about the realistic significance of The Catcher in the Rye.It is about the teenagers’ psychological education at the current times, for the character in the novel reflects a lot of psychological problems which also exist at the current times.The last part is to sum up the whole paper to show the author’s negative attitude of escaping the reality.That’s all.Thank you!
