people;thatexchangingviewscanbesomuchfun—andsomuch

rewarding,bothemotionallyandintellectually;thatpublic

speakingismosteffectivewhenyouareleastguarded;and

thatitiseentialtosucceineverywalkoflife.Atamorepracticallevel,Irealizedknowingwhatyouare

goingtosayandhowyouaregoingtosayitareequally

important.Totaketheoriginalideasoutofyourheadand

transplantthem,sotospeak,tothatofothers,youneedto

haveanorganizedmind.Thisabilityimproveswithtraining.Yetthereshouldnotbeanylooradditionordistortionin

theproce.Thoseideasthatfinallyfindtheirwayinto

anotherheadneedtoberecognizablyyours.Languageisa

meanstotransmitinformation,notameanstoobstruct

communication.Itshouldbelucidtobepenetrating.InChina,certainpublicspeakingskillshavebeenunduly

emphasized.Willitreallyhelp,wearecompelledtoask,to

bangatthepodiumoryellatthetopofyourlungs,ifyou

havecomewithapoorlyorganizedspeech,amuddledmind,and

unwillingnetotrulyshareyourviews?

asapublicspeaker,youneedtopayattention,firstand

communication”.Thirtyyearince,ChinaandAmericahave

exchangedmanyhandshakes.Thefundamentalimplicationofthis

exampleisthattheneedtocommunicateacrodifferencesin

cultureandideologyisnotonlyfeltbythetwocountriesbut

bymanyothernationsaswell.Aswecanseetoday,environmentalistsfromdifferent

countriesaremakingjointeffortstoaddretheiueof

globalwarming,economistsareseekingsolutionstofinancial

crisesthatrageinaparticularregionbutnonethele

crippletheworldeconomy,andpoliticiansanddiplomatsare

gettingtogethertodiscutheiueofcombatingterrorism.Peaceandprosperityhasbecomeacommongoalthatweare

strivingforallovertheworld.Underlyingthismightytrend

ofglobalcommunicationistheechoofE.M.Forster'swords

WiththeITrevolution,traditionalboundariesofhuman

societyfallaway.Ourculture,politics,societyandcommerce

arebeingsloshedintoonelargemeltingpotofhumanity.In

thisinterlinkedworld,therearenooutsiders,fora

disturbanceinoneplaceislikelytoimpactotherpartsof

theglobe.Wehavebeguntorealizethataworlddivided

cannotendure.Chinaisnowactivelyintegratingintotheworld.Ourrecent

entrytotheWTOisagoodexample.Fordecades,wehavetaken

prideinbeingself-reliant,butnowwerealizetheimportance

ofparticipatinginandcontributingtoabroadereconomic

order.Fromaprecariousroleintheworldarenatoour

presentWTOmembership,wehavecomealongway.Butwhatdoesthewayaheadlooklike?Insomepartsofthe

worldpeoplearedemonstratingagainstglobalization.Arethey

justified,then,incriticizingtheglobalizingworld?Instead

ofnarrowingthegapbetweentherichandthepoor,theysay,globalizationenablesthedevelopednationstoswallowthe

developingnations'wealthindebtsandinterest.Globalization,theyargue,shouldbeaboutacommoninterest

ineveryothernation'seconomichealth.WeareremindedbyKarlMarxthatcapitalgoesbeyondnational

bordersandeludescontrolfromanyotherentity.Thishas

becomeareality.Multinationalcorporationsareseekingthe

lowestcost,thelargestmarket,andthemostfavourable

policy.Theyareoftenpowerfullobbyistsingovernment

decision-making,ruthleexpansionistsintheglobalmarket

andadevastatingpresencetolocalbusinees.ForChina,stillmorechallengesexist.Howarewegoingto

ensureasmoothtransitionfromtheplannedeconomytoa

market-basedone?Howtoconstructalegalsystemthatis

soundenoughandbroadenoughtorespondtotheneedsofa

dynamicsociety?Howtomaintainourculturalidentityinan

increasinglyhomogeneousworld?Andhowtodefinegreatnein

ourriseasapeace-lovingnation?Globalizationentails

questionsthatconcernusall.LikemanyyoungpeoplemyageinChina,Iwanttoseemy

countrygetprosperousandenjoyrespectintheinternational

community.Butitseemstomethatmerepatriotismisnotjust

enough.Itisvitallyimportantthatweyoungpeopledomore

seriousthinkingandbroadenourmindtobiggeriues.There

mightneverbeeasyanswerstothoseiueuchas

globalization,buttotakethemonandgivethemhonest

thinkingisthefirststeptobepreparedforboth
