The ocean contains many strange and surprising creatures.One such creature is the puffer ['pʌfə] fish.(And this is one kind of puffer fish.)There are more than 120 species of pufferfish worldwide.The puffer fish gets its name from the way the fish protects itself from enemies.This very strange fish is probably the most poisonous creature in the ocean.Whenever it is attacked, the fish blows up its body to three times bigger than its normal size, just like a ball.(Just like this.)
It is commonly found in warm or temperate ['tempərit] 温和的regions around the world including the west coast of Central America, throughout the Indo-Pacific [indəupə'sifik], around Japan, and from Australia to South Africa.Another strange thing about it is the fact that it can’t swim like other fish.Because puffer fish（河豚或气泡鱼）does not have bones like other fish, it can only move slowly through the water when it is carried by waves.The puffer fish also has funny teeth.These teeth stick out of the fish’s mouth and are used by the fish to open the shells of creatures that live on the ocean floor.Puffer fish stands to be the second most poisonous vertebrate in the world.The poison it produces is 275 times more poisonous than the chemical which is usually used to kill rats.And there is enough toxin in one pufferfish to kill 30 adult humans.However, certain organs ['ɔ:ɡəns]of the fish, such as the liver, can be deadly.The poison in the fish, known
as toxin ['tɔksin] 毒素, can cause numbne ['nʌmnis] , high blood preure, and muscle paralysis [pə'rælisis] 麻痹, which is what leads to death as diaphragm ['daiəfræm] 隔膜muscles become paralyzed
['pærəlaizd] 使麻痹,disabling breathing.Known as fugu when eaten as a meal, many people in Asian ['eiʃən]countries , especially Japanese, like to eat fugu though some die every year from eating the fish.The puffer fish is very expensive.A plate of fugu costs more than ＄200 in some restaurants in Tokyo.In fact, the Emperor of Japan is not allowed to touch it.Usually nothing bad happens when fugu is on a restaurant's menu.Customers feel great after the meal.That's because chefs are trained to remove the insides of puffer fish before they give it to customers.However, if small amount is left, the fish is not safe to eat.The puffer fish is also known as the blowfish, swellfish, and globefish.Though considered to be one of the most unusual in appearance of all fishes and the most poisonous creature in the ocean, some people think it is lovely especially when it puffs up to a ball.Thank you!
