2011年8月18日上午，中国国务院副总理李克强在香港大学出席该校百周年校庆典礼，并以中英双语发表演讲。以下为演讲全文：

老师们、同学们、朋友们： Dear faculty, students, and friends: 今天，我很高兴来到生机盎然的港大校园[the campus of HKU, full of vigor and vitality]，同大家一起庆祝港大百年华诞。百年港大，文明积淀，薪火传递，成就了今天的辉煌，造就了众多的人才，这使我想起2000多年前中国哲人的一句名言，叫作“十年树木，百年树人”。这句话意义深刻，它揭示了教育的规律。在此，我代表中央政府对香港大学百年校庆表示热烈的祝贺！对港大全体师生员工和海内外校友致以美好的祝愿！

Today I’m delighted to be here with you to celebrate the centennial of Hong Kong University.Hong Kong University has inherited and carried on the fine traditions generations on generations, and thus making its brilliant today.HK University turned out numerous talents in the past 100 years.This reminds me of a famous saying of a Chinese philosopher 2000 years ago, “It takes 10 years to grow trees, but one hundred years to rear people”.This saying bears profound philosophy, shedding light on the nature of education.Hereby, on behalf of the central government, I extend my warmest congratulations on the centennial of Hong Kong University as well as my gracious greetings to the faculty, students, and alumni at home and abroad.百年港大，桃李遍天下。在一个世纪的风雨历程中，港大先后培养了13万多名毕业生，输送了大量胸怀大志、品学兼优、献身科学、服务社会的优秀人才。他们为香港繁荣和祖国振兴作出了重要贡献，也为人类文明进步事业发挥了积极作用。一代伟人孙中山先生是港大学长，他的精神永远激励着我们为中华民族的伟大复兴而不懈奋斗。

In the past 100 years, HKU fostered more than 130,000 academically, morally excellent graduates with lofty aspirations, devoted to scientific research and serving the society.They’ve made significant contributions to the prosperity of HK and the motherland as well as the progre and civilization of the human beings.Mr.Sun Yat-sen, father of China, was once the alumnus of HKU.His spirit will always inspire us to struggle continuously for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.[Alumnus and alumni男性校友;alumna and alumnae女性校友]

百年港大，学术成果丰硕。港大在培养人才的同时，不断开拓学术研究的新领域，许多成果获得国家和国际奖项，医学等领域研究达到世界先进水平。

HKU, while focusing on fostering talents, keeps exploring in the scientific research.Many research fruits have been awarded with national and international prizes.In particular, its medical research has reached the international level.百年港大，办学特色鲜明。多年来，港大恪守“明德格物”的校训，发挥连接中西的优势，兼容并蓄，博采众长，凝炼了注重人的素质、提倡终身学习以及践行国际化教学等人才培养的理念和模式，形成了自己的办学风格。

HKU boasts distinctive features of running education.HKU adheres to the motto of “wise and virtuous”, developing its advantage of integrating east and west civilization to its fullest extent, adopting the approach of eclecticism, shapes the unique talent-fostering mode of streing on character of students, advocating life-education and internationalized education.现在香港大学，已跻身国际高等学府前列。这是香港的光荣，也是国家的骄傲。

Nowadays HKU has been in the pantheon of the prestigious universities in the world.This is the honor of HK, of China, too.老师们、同学们、朋友们！

人才资源是第一资源。当今世界，经济全球化不断深入，科技革命酝酿新的突破，国际竞争日益激烈。这种竞争归根到底是教育的竞争、人才的竞争。无论是巩固和增强香港竞争力，还是促进国家改革开放和现代化建设，都需要发展和提升教育。相信港大和香港教育界一定能够继续发挥特色、融汇创新，广泛集聚资源，不断提升优势，为香港和国家的发展多育人才、多出成果、多做贡献。

Human resource is the most important thing in the world now.The deepening of economic globalization calls for new breakthroughs, leading to severe competition, esp.of education and talents.We need to develop and elevate education no matter in the way of consolidating and strengthening the competitivene of HK or in the way of promoting China’s reform and opening-up and modernization.I’m convinced that HKU and the other higher-learning institutions will continue to develop their advantages, integrate, innovate, and extensively pool resources with a view to fostering more talents, producing more fruits, and making more contributions.培养新型人才对教育事业提出了新的要求，大学不仅承担着传播知识、科学研究的责任，而且肩负着传承文化、服务社会的使命，港大百年校庆的主题是“知识、传承、服务”，这反映了教育促进人的全面发展的理念和功能。香港高校背靠祖国，又置身于国际化大都市，在弘扬中华优秀文化、提升香港文化品质、丰富社会精神方面，可以发挥重要作用；在优化人力资源的配置、促进教学科研成果的应用、使广大民众参与和共享社会发展进步方面，也大有可为。

Fostering new type of talents entails new requirements for education.Universities not only shoulder the responsibility of imparting knowledge and conducting scientific research, but also are endowed with the miion of inheriting culture and serving the society.This centennial ceremony’s theme is “knowledge, inheritance, and service”, which demonstrates the function of education: developing a whole person.Hong Kong universities, in the international metropolis, can play significant roles in carrying on Chinese fine traditions and cultures, elevating HK culture, and enriching the social culture.They also have great poibilities in optimizing human resource allocation, promoting the application of teaching and research fruits, appealing to civilians to be actively engaged in and sharing social progre, etc..香港的繁荣与祖国的建设，需要千千万万掌握现代知识技能、熟悉国情区情、通晓国际规则的人才，需要加强内地和香港教育交流。在这方面，香港和内地已经建立了有效的合作机制，采取了许多措施。今天在我们庆祝港大百年的时候，我想特别的告诉大家，从明年开始，中央有关部门将设立专项资金，每年支持1000名港大的学生和老师到内地去学习、考察和开展科研工作；同时，国家将支持香港其他高校与内地高校开展广泛而深入的合作，为帮助师生们了解内地、熟悉国情提供条件，促进内地和香港教育科技事业的共同发展。

The prosperity of HK and the construction of our motherland need countle talents who’re equipped with modern knowledge and techniques, familiar with national situations, know well international routines.Thus we need to enhance the educational exchanges between HK and the mainland.In this regard, HK and the mainland have established efficient mechanism of cooperation and adopted many measures.Today when we celebrate the centennial of HKU, I’d like to tell you, in particular, that, from the next year, the central government will set up exclusive fund and sponsor 1000 faculty members and students to study, inspect, and conduct research in the mainland;in the meanwhile, it will also sponsor the other higher-learning institutions to conduct extensive and in-depth cooperation with the mainland ones, helping HK faculty and students know more about the mainland as well as promoting the mutual development of the educational and scientific, and technological cause of HK and the mainland.老师们、同学们、朋友们！

在今天的会场上有许多青年学生，青年学生是人力资源中最具潜力的力量。港大的发展、香港的繁荣、祖国的昌盛，给青年学生提供了学习研究、干事创业的广阔舞台。希望同学们立足香港，志存高远，勤奋学习，不辱使命，为香港的繁荣发展贡献自己的聪明才智；关注和了解祖国的过去、现在和未来，在中华民族伟大复兴的历史进程中实现自己的人生抱负；用世界文明的优秀成果丰富自己，积极参与国际交流与合作，成为具有国际视野的人才。我相信，香港青年必定是有志、有为、有担当的，是大有希望的。

Today at present are many young students who are the most promising among the human resources.The development of HKU and the prosperity of our motherland provide you with a great platform for your studying, research, and embarking on your career.I hope you, standing firmly on the land of Hong Kong, cherishing lofty aspiration, study hard, complete your miion, and devote your wisdom and knowledge to the prosperity of HK.I hope you learn to care about and learn to understand the past, the present and the future of our motherland, which can help you realize your dreams in the great historical rejuvenation of the great Chinese nation.I hope you enrich yourselves by drawing upon the fine fruits of the world civilization, will be actively engaged in the international cooperation and exchanges so as to become talents with global vision.I’m convinced that HK youth are ambitious, responsible, pioneering, and greatly promising..教育的持续发展，需要一代又一代传承与创新。后人的成功往往是站在前人的肩膀上。港大汇聚了一支优秀的教师团队，他们既具有国际化背景，又了解本土情况，有的还在多地执教。各位老师有专精，辛勤势教，把自己的知识和积累传授给学生、传播于社会，值得全社会尊敬。我相信，老师们会继续履行传道、授业、解惑的光荣使命，在教书育人的崇高事业中取得更加优异的成果。

The continuous development of the education calls for the heritance and innovation generations on generations.Only by learning from the predeceors can we be succeful.HKU gathered up an excellent team of faculty who not only has internationalized background but also is familiar with local circumstances, among which, some are guest profeors of the universities outside Hong Kong.You deserve our respect in the way that you’re learned and specialized scholars who dieminate your knowledge to students and the society.I’m sure that you’ll continue carrying out your miion of propagating the doctrine, imparting profeional knowledge, and resolving doubts as well as make great accomplishments in the grand cause of teaching and educating people.这里，我想引用徐立之校长在港大百年校庆前夕致辞中的一句话，他是这样说的：“The University of Hong Kong was to be for China and the World（香港大学‘为中国而立，为世界而立’）”.Here I’d like to quote from Mr.Xu Lizhi’s speech on the eve of the centennial ceremony of HKU: “…”.And just now, he once again streed that HKU is a university “built for China and the world.” I echo Vice-Chancellor Tsui's view.Indeed, HKU is for Hong Kong, attracting talents and educating people to promote Hong Kong's prosperity.HKU is for China.It has become a key higher-education institution in China, playing an increasingly important role in China's development and its integration with the world.And HKU is also for the world, become an integral part of the world's academic community in advancing human knowledge.As the University of Hong Kong is proudly celebrating its first one hundred years, I strongly believe that the next one hundred years of the university will be even better.最后，让我们共同祝福港大、祝福香港、祝福祖国！

In closing, let’s place our bleing on HKU, Hong Kong, and our motherland.谢谢大家。
