Simple misunderstandings of culture, values and views on life are why a majority of divisions in the world exist today.We misunderstand those whom we are not familiar with, we
misunderstand those religions that seem foreign to us and we misunderstand the cultures of the world that seem lightyears away from our sense of civilization and our concept of
humanity.It is extremely easy to demonize someone who seems foreign or alien-like to you because you feel that you are not able to relate to them, they therefore are not capable of feeling hurt, feeling sad, feeling happy, caring about their children, etc.Our media, our leaders and our propaganda pave the way for more division by choosing to remain ignorant on many global iues, cultures and religions.Many projects have been launched, aimed at bridging the gap between races, cultures and religions from time immemorial, although they’ve been small in number they have been the most effective in creating a better understanding and mutual respect of our fellow man and woman.Sometimes when viewing other cultures, we begin to feel superior to those which we don’t know, especially in the West, because of our advanced technology, maive bank accounts and sense of security.Travelling to other countries has actually helped me understand the plights that many face and how many of us share the same challenges, in different forms.If we begin to understand and clarify, simple misinterpretations we have about others whom we hold stereotypical views about, then imagine the type of planet we could share together, rather than fight over.If we choose to extend a hand to someone from another country, whom we’ve never met and decide to venture outside of our comfort zone, we can guarantee a better understanding of another way of life and in turn gain a valuable leon in friendship and acceptance.I firmly believe that in order to change things, whether in our lives or in others, we need to understand all matters that affect the situation.In order to do this we need to walk in
someone else’s shoes in order to feel what they feel, in order to experience what they do and in order to educate ourselves on why or how they act the way they do.We can cure racism, end wars and obliterate hatred by clearly communicating the way we feel, what we want and why we want it.If our greatest fear is of being alone, then why WOULDN’T we reach out to those whom we don’t know, in order to create relationships, understanding and further the human species and poibility for peace as we know it?
