Hi, now I’m going to present the core competence analysis.At first, the most important core competence of Wal-Mart is distribution.Wal-Mart’ distribution operations are highly automated.A typical Wal-Mart discount store has more than 70,000 standard items in stock;supercenters carry more 2,000 additional grocery items, including perishables.Such items have to be ordered frequently.Then, how to manage the distribution efficiently is the key point.Wal-Mart computers are linked directly to over 200 vendors, making deliveries quicker.Meanwhile, Wal-Mart has one of the world’s largest private satellite communication systems, which enables it to control distribution.In addition, Wal-Mart has installed point-of-sale bar code scanning in all of its stores.Wal-Mart also use the cro docking policy.Wal-Mart owns a fleet of truck-tractors that can deliver goods to any store in 38 to 48 hours form the time the order is placed.After trucks drop off merchandise, they frequently pick up merchandise from manufacturers on the way back to distribution center.This back-haul rate averages over 60% and is yet another way to cut costs.Finally, with an information systems staff of 1,200 and system links with about 5,000 manufacturers, Wal-Mart leads the industry in information technology.This means Wal-Mart is dedicated to providing its aociates with the technological tools they need to work smarter everyday.With the technology, Wal-Mart is getting better, quicker, and more accurate information to manage and control every aspect of their busine.The second core competence is the policy of “everyday low price”.The key point of the retailing industry is satisfaction of customers, as a long-term policy of Wal-Mart, “everyday low price” is designed for satisfy customers.And Wal-Mart has following 2 methods to carry out the policy.First is to control the purchasing cost.As Wal-Mart has developed information system, Wal-Mart is able to keep connecting with suppliers to share the information of stock, which product has a high demand and which not, so that Wal-Mart make the stock control more efficiency.On the other hand, from the 5 forces analysis, Wal-Mart has a high power to suppliers, suppliers will provide lower price to the company.Second is to control the distribution cost.Wal-Mart uses cro docking to keep the trucks loaded.The satellite also supports a strong information system to control the distribution, by the two ways Wal-Mart improve the distribution proce more efficient, reduce the costs.The third core competence sustainability.According to Mike Duke, “Sustainability is an important part of our culture.It helps us to remove waste, lower costs and provide savings to our customers.”

Wal-Mart initiatives “Sustainability 360 degrees”.The environment goals are supplied 100% by renewable energy, to create 0 waste, and to sell products that sustain our resources and the environment.In 2009, Wal-Mart pledged to double its use of solar energy in California.VRIO

According to the analysis above, we can know that the distribution proce, policy of “everyday low price” and the sustainability all provide competitive advantages to Wal-Mart, so they are value.Then the such strong distribution system, the ability to carry out “everyday low price” policy, and the goals of 100% renewable energy are not belong to most retailors, so they are rarene.As the distribution system will make a huge cost at first, and as the largest retailor in world, Wal-Mart has a high influence power in industry to carry the policy of everyday low price, and most retailing companies in word don’t have the ability to use renewable energy, so they are difficult to imitate.As the largest retail company, Wal-Mart has enough ability to control the 3 competences.So, the 3 core competences are competitive advantages.
