A Young Apple Tree
一棵小苹果树
A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for thewonderful apple he grew.
一个穷困的农夫有一个朋友，这个朋友因为种了神奇的苹果树而远近闻名。
One day, his friend gave the farmer a young appletree and told him to take it home and plant it.
有一天，农夫的这个朋友送给他一棵小苹果树。
The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home he did not know where to plant it.
农夫对这个礼物非常高兴。但当他回到家时，却不知道将它栽在什么地方。
He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If heplanted the tree in one of his field, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of theapples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit.
他担心他把苹果树栽在路边，陌生人会偷树上的苹果，他把树种在自己的一块地里，邻居们夜里就会过来偷苹果。他把树栽在自己的房子边，他的孩子们就会摘苹果。
Finally he planted the tree in his wood where no one could see it. But without sunlight and goodsoil, the tree soon died.
最后，他把那棵树栽在了林子里，那里没人能看见。但没有阳光和泥土，树不久就死了。
Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place.“Whats thedifference?” the farmer said angrily. “If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers wouldhave stolen the fruit.
后来，朋友问农夫他为什么把树栽在那样贫瘠的地方。“那有什么不一样?”农夫生气地说， “我把苹果树栽在路边，陌生人就会偷树上的'苹果。

A Bundle of Sticks
一捆树枝
A man once had four sons who never stoppedquarrelling with one another.
从前有一个人，他有四个儿子，但儿子们不断地争吵。
He was always telling them how much easier lifewould be if they worked together but they tookabsolutely no notice of him.
他一再告诫他们说，如果他们一起干活儿，生活会舒适得多，但他们丝毫不理会他的意见。
One day he decided to show them what he meant.
有一天，他决定通过示范把自己的意思告诉他们。
He called all the sons together and put a tightly tied bundle of sticks on the floor in front ofthem.
他把四个儿子都叫来，又把一捆扎得很紧的`树枝放在他们面前。
“Can you break that?” he asked the youngest son. The boy put his knee on the bundle butthough he pressed and pulled with his arms he could not bend the wood.
“你能折断这个吗?H他问最小的儿子。小儿子用膝盖顶住，两只手又压又拉，都不能把那捆树枝弄弯。
The father asked each son in turn to try to break the bundle, but none of them could do it .
父亲让另外三个儿子挨个儿试了试，但他们谁也做不到。
Then he untied the string and scattered the sticks.
然后，他解开绳子，把树枝撒开。
“Now try,”he said. The boys broke the sticks easily in their hands.

“Do you see what I mean?” asked the father. "If only you stand together no one can hurt you .
