1902年11月26日罗荣桓诞生在南湾旗杆屋场新大屋，3岁时全家搬到南湾街上，12岁那年迁入异公享祠。1921年在家乡办起农民夜校，1926年又在家乡从事农民运动，组织“衡山梦字九区农民协会”。1927年春离开这里，参加鄂南暴动，继而参加秋收起义，此后一直在军队中从事政治领导工作。

1983年，故居列被为省级文物保护单位，1985年全面维修后对外开放。为介绍罗荣桓光辉的一生，故居内设有陈列室，展出珍贵文献、照片和实物150余件。故居匾额由胡耀邦同志亲笔题写。

修复后的罗荣桓故居，完全保持了原貌。主体陈列380多平方米，再现了罗荣桓同志家庭当年的生活情景，恢复了罗荣桓同志卧室、书房、以及罗荣桓祖母卧室、父母卧室、客厅、健身房、火炉屋、“永隆杂货铺”。罗荣桓卧室陈列的储柜、板床、抽屉、梳洗台、书柜、梳妆盒、双影镜、床头小方桌等都是罗荣恒同志用过的原物。火炉屋陈列的火桌、碗柜、坐凳等亦系原物。

辅助陈列室，是利用厨房、碓臼屋等四间杂房改建的。陈列内容按罗荣桓同志生平活动年代顺序分六个部分：

一、立志救国救民，上下苦心求索（1910——1927年）；

二、坚持井冈山斗争，参加二万五千里长征（1927——1937年）；

三、挥师骋山东，艰苦抗战八年（1937——1945年）；

四、转战东北、华北，决胜“辽沈”、“平津”（1945——1949年）；

五、献身社会主义事业，为人民鞠躬尽瘁（1949——1963年）；

六、缅怀革命先辈，致力振兴中华。共展出各个时期的珍贵照片84幅，重要革命、历史文献资料50件，实21件，真实生动地再现了罗荣桓同志光辉战斗的一生。
