Internship report

My name is Chen XX, English nameXX Chen.I’ve finished my internship in Kochi, Kerala, India. My work is to organize fund raising activities for a mentally challenged rehabilitation named Asadeepam Rehabilitation Centre located in Santhigiri, Kalamaery. The school was sponsored by Santhimargam Social Welfare Service Society.During my 1.5 months’ internship, I’ve tried different methods to raise fund for the special school and have got some positive results. Here’re some details about my trials:

1.A charitable busine competition. This was my first attempt for fund raising activities.I planned to organize a busine competition in a nearby university, Cochin University, which was considered to be the best and biggest one in Kochi.I wrote an overall plan for it.Generally speaking, the students in the university should make up sales plans for a supermarket named, Varkey, which is the most famous supermarket in Kochi, then carried out their sales plans. In return, the supermarket should donate some of their sales as a contribution to our school. And for those who take part and get the highest sales in the competition, we should award them with internship opportunities in some big companies. We went to a nearby Varkey and got a chance to talk to its manager, he was kind enough to listen to us for about 15 minutes although he was very busy.He also agreed to take the plan to discu with his colleagues. However, out of concern for the safety of their goods and the unified price system of the supermarket, he objected our plan. But he was willing to help us by providing some employment in the supermarket for some adults in the special school.2.Street donation.Considering the charitable nature of fund raising for special school, I decided to try street donation. At the end of January, I, with some other EPs, went to the International Stadium where an exhibition was taking place and

started the street donation activities. We held donation boxes, Indian flags, boards of our school and stood at the exit of the exhibition to ask the paers-by for donation. We continued the activity for 2 nights and have got RS 3150 for the school, which equals a month’s fee for one child.3.Internship project. As the studies of mentally challenged is of good value for some nursing schools, I wrote another project aociating with providing internship chances to nursing students in corresponding hospitals. One hospital, named, PVC hospital in Kochi, sent their nursing students to our school for observing our claes. We went to talk to the manager of the hospital and he was kind enough to agree giving some donation to us in March.4.Help to find jobs. The Varkey manager, previously mentioned, used to say that they were willing to give us some employment in their supermarket. So I recommended two persons and wrote their profile to the manager. One was an adult, aged 22, named, Dileep Simon. The other is a student’s mother.I wrote the information files for them and we took them to the varkey’s manager. The manager said they were willing to help us by giving them some job vacancies. After that, we took Dileep, the student, to see their HR manager and filled in some employment forms. At that time, the manager said that Dileep could go to work the next day, but the next day he told us that the supermarket had come up with other plans for our school and told us to wait for their contact.5.Internship promotion in UC college’s old schoolmates’ get together party

One psychologist who works in our school told me there was going to be a get together party for the old schoolmates of the psychology department and I decided to do some promotion for our internship project on the party. On that day, it was very embarraing as it was very abrupt for me to interrupt the department’s arrangement for their get together.Everyone was very confusing why there should be a strange girl with yellow skin and

black hair to give a speech about a special school, which has nothing to do with their get together meeting, after the inspiring speech of their profeors.I really feel that I’ve gained a lot from this internship.I think this experience has brought changes in cognition, knowledge, communication skills, and etc.I feel enrichment in many aspects of myself. Before I came here, I chose India as the AIESEC here is very famous for their TN programs and Indian LC gives the quickest response to my appliance and questions, which saved me lots of troubles especially at a time when I was busy preparing for my exams. And the TN is about doing good for the mentally retardation, which, I consider, must be really in need of society’s help.Apart from that, I haven’t done much research about India. All I know is that it’s a country near China which saves me money when buying flight ticket.Kerala is a state in low latitude that could save me after suffering the freezing winter in Beijing for such a long time. But this oversea experience has given me too much and it’s beyond words.I’ve gained enrichment and experience:

1.To overcome fear and uncertainty. As a sophomore in the second year of my university life, this is my first time abroad. Before I came I keep questioning myself whether I could survive in a totally unfamiliar country without any support from friends and family.I would never forget how I worried if there was no one picking me up from the airport and the number I was given was an out-of-service number.I would never forget how I used to panic when I got lost at night because I failed to find those mysterious bus stops and failed to recognize the mysterious Malayalam bus names.I was so afraid of doing anything offensive that would make Indian people not happy.I was also afraid if I couldn’t get used to the food and I would suffer to death if I failed to find a Chinese restaurant…

But now I know the bus to Asadeepam is Aluva via NAD and I know the Malayalam characters.I know if I got lost in some corner of the city I can take any bus to Caloor first then to get my bus.I’ve known names like Menaka Junction, Edappally, Padma Junction, HMT, Caloor, Ernakulam town, bank junction…and I know you must get on and off the bus quickly and talk to the conductors quickly or the people will push you

hard without giving any privacy and the conductor will not understand you.I’ve learnt to eat with hands, which, if I did it in my family, my father would slap on my face.I’ve got used to the different eating time and have found Indian food quite nice…as I’m talking this to you;you might think it’s like nothing. But for me, for everyone who is first abroad, these are all special gains. And you would feel happine and discover joys when you find you’ve already fit in, and ease in a brand new surroundings with people from a totally different cultural background. At this time, fears turn into joys that you can hardly explain.2.To accept failure, embarrament and depreion.I’ve tried different methods for fund raising. Some of them work, some of them fail, some of them make sense, and some of them are ridiculous. But now, as I look back on my days, I’m proud and joyful of what I have done, and I consider this as my precious experience for my whole life.I’ve written many plans, for competitions, for internship projects, for job hunting in supermarket.I’ve tried standing in the exit of the exhibition for 2 and a half hour for two days regardle of some men’s laughing and pointing.I managed to keep smiling even the principle of the UC College met us during his meeting and interrupted my introduction with an affirming “I can’t help you”.I’m managed to tell myself it’s OK after waiting for the manager of Seematti for 2 hours and ended up she won’t show up that day…

But I feel happy that I got a chance to talk to Reliance marketing manager about my busine plan through telephone.I feel happy that the principle of my school helped me so much with my plan and has given me much trust.I feel happy that we’ve got more than RS3000 for the children from the two nights’ donation.I feel happy that the PVC hospital keeps sending their nursing students to our school and the manager said would take a look at my internship plan and promised will give some donation in cash in March, I feel happy that one of the Varkey manager is willing to help our children by providing job vacancies…Fund raising is a job filled with preure, but also pains and gains.I feel very fulfilled after all these trial and errors.Whatever the result is, I, as a foreigner who stay for 1.5 months, have tried my best with all I can.If I haven’t join AIESEC and haven’t been involved in such program, I’ll probably stay in my house, watch TV and surf the net for the whole winter holiday.I’ll never meet so many wonderful people as the principle of Asadeepam, my roommate Emily, other interns from different countries and AIESEC Kochi.I’ll never know there is a wonderful place in southwestern India named, Kochi, with

such amazing sceneries, and kind people.I’ll treasure the experience forever and I’d like to thank AIESEC for providing such a great platform for me to train, to practice and to realize my goal of improving myself.3.To gain more practical cognition to a foreign country

Cro my heart, I love India.I’ve known it from a more comprehensive aspect. The principle of Asadeepam has treated me very well. She sometimes made breakfast for me, she took me to Beauty Saloon, she took me to beautiful seashore and waterfall at weekend, she told me stories about India…She is just like my family members who give me warm, which has made me le homesick even when I needed to spend Chinese New Year in a foreign country for the first time.Children in Asadeepam are very lovely and kind to me.They kept calling me “Lee teacher!” and smiled politely to me all the time.People in India are so hospitality. They took me back to school once I got lost at night. They helped me with my belongings in the crowded buses. They smiled friendly to me whenever they saw me, and they are always there to help whenever I need one.I’ve never been so warm-welcomed before and I’m deeply touched by this incredible city.I’ve removed much prejudice to this country and sincerely have fallen in love with it.4.To get a more comprehensive understanding of the mentally retardation

This is my first time to be with the mentally retarded.During this Internship, I spent my time having leons, eating, playing, and working with them.I’ve found that they are just as lovely as common children. They are friendly, paionate, naughty, and hardworking. Some of them, I should say, are even quite smart. The only difference they have compared to other children is that they need more help in some aspects of their daily life. They deserve more love and care from the others. At last I’d like to expre my appreciation for AIESEC, especially for the LC of BFSU of Beijing, China and Kochi, India for providing me with such a wonderful platform.I’ll remember this wonderful experience forever and will remember the honor and pride of being an EP of AIESEC.
