Graduation Practice Report

(1)The purpose of graduation practice

Firstly, as a newly graduated student, we need to deepen our understanding of occupation and industry in the society and confirm the career we like and do well in.To understand the career and industry, there are many ways: reading the articles, asking the people in the industry and so on, but the most direct way is to experience in person.In the proce of doing translation, you can determine whether you like translation and whetheryou have the ability to do it well.Secondly, graduation practice makes us prepare to changefrom students to office workers.It is often said that the university is an ivory tower.In fact, there is a huge difference between school and workplace, learning and working and between the students and staff.In such a proce, people's attitudes, behavior and psychological aspects have to do the appropriate adjustments.Thirdly, internship can enhance competitive advantages when we are looking for work, so we need to practice before graduation.For example, after our graduation practice, we have the experience of translation, which will give us a competitive advantage if we want to find a translation job.(2)Duration of graduation practice:2012.02.27----2012.04.13

(6)The proce of graduation practice

Our graduation practice can be divided into two procees: imitation translation and real practice.Imitation translation:

For the first two weeks, from 29th February to 5th March, we did imitation translation in North China Institute of Science and Technology.Our teacher gave us materials to translate.They included translation and interpretation.We spent one week to finish translation and another week to communicate and discu.We share our experiences in translation, such as, the difficulties we suffered, our own solutions and the leons we learnt from the practice.All of us benefit much from it.Real practice in company:

From 12nd March to 12nd April,we had the 4 weeks for the internship.The other eight students with me went to the company together.Our group always arrived at the company every morning 10 minutes earlier even though it is far away from our school.We began to work at nine o 'clock every morning startingour work in a busy day.At noon there were an hourbreak for lunch and in the afternoon, we went off work at 5:00 p.m.During the internship, our duty was translation for the trade materialsand filling out the form.In the first week, it was our main goal to have a general understanding of the company.The manager made a train for us in the first day to introduce the company's main busine and cultural life.We know that it is a trading company marketing TFT-LCD to domestic and international area.In the working hours, we worked hard to finish the work in time;in the rest of the time, we communicated with thecompany personnel.Through a week's internship, wealmost adapted to the company and got along with the personnel.In the second week, we were aigned to translatean introduction of ”TFT-LCD“ which is their main products.For me it is a difficult task, because there are too manyprofeional termsabout their busine.And there are many abbreviations.We need to refer to a lot of material online to determine how to translate it.And some words are two kind of meaning, for example: NA, on one hand it can mean ”no“, and on the other hand, it also means ”national".Because ofthetwo big differences, we have difficulty to judge the meaning.Finally, referring to a large number of data, I'm sure NA is without meaning.So I feel better and more efficient to perform the neceary reference books which are indispensable.In the third week, because we are not so profeional to translate the profeional terms, so we spent one week to learn the terms related to the TFT.There are some terms in the following:TFTThin Film Transistor、LCDLiquid Crystal Display、LEDLight Emitting Diode、GLS Gla、substrate or gla substrate、C/F Color Filter、PNL Panel、NB Notebook、Active Area、Aperture Ratio、Response Time、Contrast Ratio、FHDFull Height Definition、CIM(Computer Integration Manufacturing)、FA(Factory Automation)、ESD(Electro-static Discharge)、Clean suit(bunny suit，dust-free garment)、Clean shoes(dust-free shoes，boots)、NTSC National Television Systems Committee and etc.In the last week, we continued to translate some materials which were designed to expand the market of the company.So I fully realized although in the school we learned a lot of English words and mastered English grammar with commonly used terms, but for the profeional English vocabulary and usage what we are good at is very little.We should workwith care, knowing a little negligence may bring about great lo.So we worked as careful as poible when finishing our translations cooperating with others.(7)Summary of graduation practice

For nearly four weeks of translation practice came to an end.I remember our translation teacher once said to us: be a qualified translator, we need to have at least 2000 wordsin mind and more than 100 common fixed sentence patterns in order to do translation work well by ourselves.Otherwise we will suffer a lo of words and an unexpreed wordeverywhere.In translation practice, I actually met the problemthe teacher had expected.First of all, it is the vocabulary which is not enough for me to make the translation work perfectly.I had to resort to the computer, dictionary and other search tools forthe key wordsI can't describe.Next, the lack of the usual expreions also makes me in the course of translation into a tap.Again, some proprietary vocabulary I am not familiar with and some proprietary scientific terms, also makes my translation work progre not very well.We really get experience from ten days of practice.Not only we worked in the group together which gave us the achievement the respect of others, but also the teacher in the company gave us more directions about translation.As a profeional translator who is also related to English, the teacher told us his own experiencesin translation and many vital mistakes actually occurred when doing translation experience which lets us learn more knowledge and widen the field of vision.Through this translation practice, let me more clearly understand the deficiency ofEnglish words, and also make me more aware of the importance ofenrichingour vocabulary context and English sentence patterns.I am looking forward to the job of translating.Full of the paion, I want more strict requirements.I want to become aqualified translator, but now I have not enough related knowledge.In the future, I will work harderand learn look more knowledge.Thanks for this course which let me understand my own shortage.
