Thinking of Madame Bovary

Madame Bovary is the first publication of Gustave Flaubert’s works, which helped him settle a prominent status in the literary circles.In the book, Flaubert narrated a story of a woman’s whole life with a tragic consequence.To me, what impreed me are two points: the sarcastic voice and Emma’s relentle pursuit of romantic love.In the book, the author used many sarcastic sentences to satirize the characters.“Instead of improving the soil, they persist in keeping up the pasture lands, however depreciated they may be in value, and the lazy borough, growing away from the plain, has naturally spread riverwards.” This sentence lampooned the lazy people,who even did not work to improve their lives with a big plain in front of them, which on the other hand criticized the contemporary banal socity after the stirring revolution.When the author depicted the chemist , he described the man appeared to take life as calmly as the goldfinch suspended over his head in its wicker cage.We know that the bird belonging to the sky, so how can it be calm in the small cage? But the chemist enjoyed his life in the distant town without knowing the outer world, which showed the author’s scorn to the people’s mediocrity.As mentioned before, Flaubert described the characters in a common way seen from the

surface, but in fact he used these common words to criticize the society, to expre his repugnance to the fact.What’s more, the narration of Emma’s pursuit of romantic love shoked me.As for Emma, before her mother’s death, she studied in a school, and the stories which were brought by the nun, made her a girl filled with romantic dreams.However, as time went by, Emma find that Bovary could not correspond to her dream husband, who was witty, knew everything, loved dancing and reading poets.So when she met Leon, she began to compromise.But Leon abandoned her at last.Then she was together with Rodolfo, who also cheated her.I think her pursuit of romantic love is not a wrong thing.The biggest wrong of her is she didn’t recognise that the elegance of the noble based on wealth.But she was just a wife of common docter.As far as I am concerned, we should be a down-to-earth person.Though our fortune isn’t much, we can also persuit and enjoy actual pleasure and happine.The unreasonable ambition will mislead us to a life full of darkne.We will not see the boom of flowers on the roadside, smell the fragrance of earth in the field, and listen the voice of various birds in the forest.We will lose the happine of simple life.Life does not need much wealth.We should own a life really filled with what we want , not illusion.Only doing this, our life will

be happy ending.
