Death of a Traveling Salesman
Death of a Traveling Salesman is a short psychological fiction of Eudora Welty.It described the things happened before the death of a traveling salesman—R.J.Bowman to reveal the theme of the fiction.R.J.Bowman is the protagonist of the fiction.He has been a traveling salesman for a shoe company for fourteen years.It was a winter day, he was ill on the way back to his home.He had rest in a hotel and gone to the doctor, but nothing be better.He drove his Ford along a rutted dirt path.He felt angry, weak and helple.Then he got lost and his car run off over the precipice.In his helple, he asked a couple for help.He had a strong sense of love and being loved during his stay at the couple’s home.Finally he run out of the home and sank in fright onto the road and died.After reading the fiction, I was shocked by the writer’s excellent writing skill.The description of the details of R.J.Bowman’s feeling and psychology told us what kind of man Bowman was.He was a man who was busy earning his life: he had little time to stop even he was in ill.Just like it described “He had looked something like a bullfighter”.He was a man who did not know how to deal with people.So when he was lost, he dared not to ask for help.He felt constraint with the couple.He was a hypocritical man.When he had the car accident, he still cared about his appearance and dignity.He was so lonely and had a strong sense of love and being loved.When he met with the woman, he felt he fell in love with her.And after he saw the deep love between the couple, the sense of love and being loved grew even stronger and “He wished that the child were his”.We can easily find that the death of the traveling salesman is destined.He was a man who was lonely and hypocritical and did not know how to deal with people.After he saw the strong love and happine between the couple he can not bare his loneline and felt helple and hopele, so he died.
