Book Review of Les Misérables
What is Les Misérables all about? In my chilrhood, I thought it was a story about a bad guy chasing a good person.I didn’t recognize that it is an epic of love, grace and redemption until the recent reading. The real epic does not only tell the time change or revolution but also concern with human’s soul. The souls of people are no le spectacular than the most deramatic revolution. That’s the reason why Hugo spent a large part of the book setting up the character of Bienvenu and her believe in religion which, in my point of view, is the key of understanding this splendid epic.Les Misérables depicts the burgeoning city and the remote town as well. But it mainly focuses on the city--Paris.Owing to that it can surely be hailed as the Encyclopaedia of Paris.Readers can have a glance of prison, slum, streets, sewers, cunning and audacious gangs, rough but kind-hearted children, stiff but holy cloister and deprived and angry people serving hard labor.Readers follow Hugo to stroll on the street, feel the breath of the venerable city and have a tiny touch of the secrets hiding behind the shutters.Hugo is a compaionate Christian. His will began like this: “God, soul and responsibility are enough to me.I entertain these conceptuion to live and to die.God, to me, is truth, luminosity, justice and conscience.” This belief explains particular features of each characters in his book.Gavroche was of course uneducated but was brave and kind;Eponine had a deep and crazy love for Marius, surprisingly to readers, she sacrificed her life for another.Jean Valjean was once jealous and afraid that his daughter would be taken away by a young man, but finally he safed that young man without hesitation.“ Everything and everyone has its dark side, which we spit on and frown upon. But at the same time, it/he has its strengh and virtue which we shall adore.” Hogo once said.He vividly potrayed the opposite side of people’s character to reveal human nature. In the 1832 Paris Revolution, Hogo, on one side, highly praised the insurrectionlists’ nobility;on the other side, he cruelly showed readers the cold and detached maes and shamele speculators who shall take part of the blame for the failure of revolution. With those aspects I discued above, Les Misérables is a real epic.It tells the stories of souls, people, city, country and an era.It depicts evil and virtue and describes them as the two sides of a coin.Yes, Les Misérables tells stories. But not only stories.
