Pride &Prejudice Book Review

Pride and Prejudice was first published in 1813, although Jane Austen had written it between October of 1796 and August of 1797.This was at a time when women were expected to stay at home and just be a pretty face, not think for themselves, and not involve themselves in politics or careers.Men were authors;women were not.Even when Pride and Prejudice was finally published in 1813, Austen’s name did not appear as the author of the book, and in fact, Austen was never given credit for being the author of any of her works while she was alive.Regardle, Jane Austen is one of the most widely read authors of English literature and there is no doubt in my mind as to why this is true. She had a lot to say about women and society in England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.Pride and Prejudice is quite comic and it paints a clear picture of how women who lacked their own fortune oftentimes had to give up love to marry for economic security and social status. And Pride and Prejudice was set in the English countryside in a county roughly thirty miles from London, the novel opens with the Bennet family in Longbourn and their five unmarried daughters. The family itself is not nearly as rich as those they interact with and because they have no
sons, the property is legally entailed to pa to a male heir, in this case Mr.Collins.Mrs.Bennet is intent on seeing her daughters married off to wealthy men and when Charles Bingley arrives at nearby Netherfield Park she is excited by the prospect of introducing her daughters to him.She immediately sends her husband to visit him on the first day he arrives. The first two sentences of the whole book are great. They will always be two of my favorite opening lines from any book, and they set the stage for all of the ridiculousne that is about to happen throughout the rest of the story“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in poeion of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.”
In fact, there are really three characters in this story—Elizabeth, Mr.Wickham, and Mr.Darcy.The pride of Mr.Darcy leads to Elizabeth’s prejudice, but it is also Elizabeth’s contempt and honesty that allures Mr.Darcy.Her prejudice is promoted and abused by Mr.Wickham—a man of ill nature but good disguise, whose self-importance and vanity are to surface later.Elizabeth is first partial to Mr.Wickham, fuelled by empathy and prejudice(in a good way). She rejects Mr.Darcy’s proposal, which
does not seem to hurt Mr.Darcy’s pride but only strengthens his intention. She began to see Mr.Darcy through her own eyes. The more she observes, the more affectionate she become to him.Her love for him is never a sudden one—it grows out of guilt, shame, gratitude, respect, and admiration.Elizabeth makes Mr.Darcy a le proud creature, while Mr.Darcy makes Elizabeth realize her own prejudice. It is love that motivated two.We all have pride, self-importance, and esteem. We all tend to be defensive when our importance is threatened by another “higher” being. So we impose stereotypes, prejudices, and biases on others. We judge people, we make evaluations based on fractions of facts, and we fill gaps with our imagination and treat imagination as evidence. In the end, our prejudice serves no other purpose than our pride.Prejudice prevents us from listening, so we will never hear what others have suffered.Prejudice prevents us from observing, so we will never see their true conducts.Prejudice prevents us from reflecting, so we shall never doubt our own righteousne and hence our esteem is preserved. How hard it is to see what is really there!
