A Unique Friendship
A Christmas Memory written by Truman Capote who is a well-known American writer between 1950s and 1970s.Many of his short stories, novels, plays, and nonfiction are recognized literary claics.At least 20 films and television dramas have been produced from Capote novels, stories and screenplays.This story takes place during the Christmas season.There are two main characters.One is introduces their background.They are cousins and they live with other relatives who are arrogant and disrespectful to them.But they are forgiving and easygoing.Though they are really poor, they show an optimistic and enthusiastic attitude in their future.They have a lovable dog which called Queenie.The woman, the boy and the dog lead a lighthearted and tranquil life.The woman and the boy want to make some fruitcakes.So they collect money and
materials for them.Then, they find Haha Jones to buy whiskey.Mr.Haha gives them a bottle of whiskey for free instead of making a fruitcake for him.They are energetic.When they finish the fruitcakes, they share them to their friends.Later that evening, the elderly cousin decides to celebrate by finishing off the spare whiskey in the bottle.This lead to the two of them being criticized angry relatives.The woman cries sadly, so the boy comforts her by saying that she is fun but funny.The next day, they go to a faraway grove to find a Christmas tree.They manage to take back a tree which is twice as tall as a boy, so that a boy cannot steal the star.On the way home, a rich woman wants to buy the tree.Although they can get five dimes, they refuse.They spend the following days making decorations for the tree and presents for the relatives.This is their last Christmas together.The following year, the boy is sent to military school.The woman is alone with Queenie.Then alone, because the frisky and affectionate dog is injured, and just lives one day.Although they just stay connect to each other by letters, it does not last because the woman suffers more and more the ravages of old age.Not long after, she paes away and just leaves the boy miing her everyday.The boy says “Home is where my friend is.”It is a melancholy story.All the activities paint a vivid picture of the most sincere
friendship of human beings.It shows us a precious friendship which is between a more than sixty year old woman and just a seven year old boy.It tells me that we should treasure our friends, and treasure each friendship.Good literary works almost always have the magic to take readers into the author’s world.We feel all the character’s pain and we share their happine.They can even bring back those memories we have about our own lives or relate to what we are experiencing now.If you read this story, I believe that you will love it!
