The Future World: The Time Machine
GXM The Time Machine is a science fiction novel written by H.G.Wells, published in 1895.In effect, Wells had considered the notion of time travel before, in a short story titled “The Chronic Argonauts”.This work, published in his college newspaper, blazing the trail for The Time Machine. The book's protagonist is
ascientist and
inventor living in Victorian England, and called by a narrator as the Time Traveller. The narrator starts the whole storyby discuing time--the fourth dimension with his weekly dinner guests. However, he secretly builds a machine capable of carrying a person through time, and when he returns, he begins to restates his long journey, becoming the new narrator. In the new narrative, the Time Traveller goes to A.D.802,701with his device.tests, where he meets the Eloi, a society of small, elegant, childlike adults. They live in small and futuristicbuildings, doing no work and feeding on fruits. There he also meets the Morlocks, who live in darkne underground and surface only at night. What’s worse, they consider Elois as their foods and capture them everyday so that every one of the Eloi fears the Morlocks to death and never dares to fight back.Meanwhile, he saves an Eloi named Weena from drowning as none of the other Eloi take no notice that she is in jeopardy.Very soon, they develop an innocently relationship in several days.It is a coincidence that he find some fresh matches and learn that fire can be used as a strong weapon against the Morlocks, whom he must fight to get back his machine. He plans to take Weena back to his own time though, whenthey stop in the forest, they are then overcome by Morlocks in the night, and Weena faints. The Traveller escapes when a small fire he had left behind them to distract the Morlocks catches up to them as a forest fire;Weena and the pursuing Morlocks are lost in the fire. After a series of struggle, the Time Traveller gain his machine back.He reattaches the levers and goes on to 30 million years from his own time. There he has a taste of the primitive nature. And eventually, he returns to his lab, relating his adventure to his guests. Then, after promising to return in a short period of time, the narrator reveals that after 3 years of waiting, the Time Traveller has never returned. The story reflects Wells's own socialist political views, his view on life and abundance, and the contemporary angst about industrial relations. It is also influenced by Ray Lankester's theories about social degeneration and shares many elements with EdwardLytton's novel Vril, the Power of the Coming Race. These works all convey a same theme that the evolvement of human race.Within dwellings of the Eloi and the Morlocks, the Time Traveller, as well as the author, discoversthe leisured claes have become the ineffectual Eloi, and the downtrodden working claes have become the light-fearing Morlocks. His revised analysis is that their relationship is not one of lords and servants, but of livestock and ranchers. The Time Traveller concludes that intelligence is the result of and response to danger;with no real challenges facing the Eloi, they have lost the spirit, intelligence, and physical fitne of humanity at its peak.Furthermore, The Time Machine can be read as a symbolic novel. There are several symbols, including the Sphinx, flowers, and fire. The statue of the Sphinx is the place where the Morlocks hide the time machine and references the Sphinx in the story of Oedipus who gives a riddle that he must first solve before he can pa.Also, the Sphinx appeared on the cover of the first London edition as requested by Wells and would have been familiar to his readers. As for the white flowers, it can symbolize Weena's devotion and innocence and contrast with the machinery of the time machine. They are the only proof that the Time Traveller's story is true. And when it comes to fire, it symbolizes civilization, as the Time Traveller uses it to off the Morlocks, but it escapes his control and turns into a forest fire. The time machine itself can also be viewed as a symbol, for this fictional device appeared to the world from then on.More and more author want to make it a topic to discu, to depict, or to long for.Even more and more scientists embark on studying it and make it true by giving them best shot.Referring to its language style, there is still something appealing. Its language features the narrative angles. At first, “I” am just one of the profeor’s guests, knowing nothing about the Time Machine and profeor’s time travelling. However, when the Time Traveller works on telling stories, “I” become another guy who has gone through every details. So the whole story is told by seemingly simple “I”, yet it bring us different experience and taste.Overall, the Time Machine starts uniquely and ends wistfully, collecting dangers, love, and knowledge. What’s stunning, its exposure of the development of future is rather convincing which makes it a definitely terrific novel. And may us all find where we belong to in future world.
