Daisy: a gold digger
In the eyes of Gatsby, Daisy is an educated, elegant and charming lady.Throughout his lifetime, Gatsby was committed to pursuing his godde of fantasy.But, as a rational reader, I feel deeply sorry for Gatsby’s love and persistence.Meantime, I want to say that a woman like Daisy doesn’t deserve love at all.She was not good enough for Gatsby.Because, in eence, she is no more than a material girl.If we make an in-depth analysis of Daisy, we are going to find that she just suits all the typical qualities of a gold digger, such as worshipping money, snobbery, superficiality, hypocrisy and indifference.Daisy is a strong believer in money.Unlike Gatsby’s holy and pure love, her love is closely linked with money.She can easily betray her first love just because of a string of pearls valued at three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.Indeed, she can sacrifice everything including her love.It is money that made Daisy give up her first love and marry Tom.Several years later, it is still money that pushed her back to Gatsby.When seeing Gatsby’s piles of expensive and exquisite shirts, she suddenly cried stormily.“‘They’re such beautiful shirts;it makes me sad because I’ve never seen such-such beautiful shirts before.’ She sobbed.” It seems that her voice is filled with gold.It is obvious that she was touched by his enormous wealth not his sincere love.How ironic and dramatic the scene is!For many years, Gatsby has been longing for the love of his muse, but what he doesn’t know is that his Daisy is just like any other material girls.There’s no denying that Daisy is a fairly snobbish woman.Being a member of rank and fashion, she is only willing to make contact with gentries.So while she heard that Gatsby had been a bootlegger, Daisy was totally shocked.“Her frightened eyes told that whatever intentions, whatever courage she had had, were definitely gone.” She has already made a clean break with him in her mind.From this point, we can find a snobbish woman has come alive on the paper.Although she looks glamorous and gorgeous, her inner world is nothing except emptine and solitude.In order to enjoy a privileged lifestyle, she married a man she didn’t like at all.On the material level, she can boast that she has the ability to poe everything, which makes a lot of people envy.However, she is also extremely poor and pathetic from a mental standpoint.She doesn’t even have goals or pursuits for life.What she always worries about is “what is doing this afternoon?” What will we do the day after tomorrow?” “After 30 years?” And at that moment, Gatsby appeared in her life.She takes for granted that he can bring her pleasure and fun in her boring life.Maybe, Daisy had treated Gatsby with sincerity once.But when she decided to abandon love and marry Tom, she has already chosen to be a hypocritical person.Since then, she is never sincere to anyone including her husband and Gatsby.She is quite clear that her husband gets a mistre.However, she doesn’t get angry with him at all, let alone divorce him.Every day, she is pretending to live like a noblewoman and participates in various parties.Actually, she and her husband have their own life.Her marriage has already exists in name only.The only thing that sustains her marriage is just money.When I read this line: “Daisy began to sob helplely ‘I did love him once-but I loved you too’.” I think nothing is more ridiculous and sarcastic than her hypocrisy and affectation.She can tell lies anytime and anywhere.In fact, she never really loves anybody.The only one she loves is herself.Daisy is a thoroughly selfish woman who has no compaion for human life.In the end of the story, it is also her selfishne and indifference that destroyed Gatsby.When she realized a pedestrian was killed by her.She doesn’t have any feeling of guilt.She felt extremely scared because she was afraid to be sent to prison.On the night of the accident, that coldhearted couple was conspiring together and intended to blame the accident on Gatsby.What’s makes people even more angry is that Daisy didn’t send a bouquet of flowers, make a phone call or even shed a single tear after Gatsby had been shot by the husband of the victim.In the end, Gatsby died as a scapegoat, while Daisy and his husband fled abroad and went on vacation.Sadly, Gatsby hadn’t known what Daisy really is before he died.In the spirit-broken times, Daisy is just a typical representative of the showy and luxurious, gaudy and common world full of desires.She is the incarnation of Gatsby’s American Dream and this kind of dream is destined to become a fantasy.What Daisy highly praises is mammonism hedonism, and individualism.If these rotten thoughts became the mainstream values, it would be very hard to imagine what the society will be like.From the perspective of literature, Daisy is and will be one of the claics of world literature to depict the image of a material girl.
