该专业的前身是1950年开设的农业经济专业，1999年本科专业目录调整后改为农林经济管理专业。该专业是中国人民大学的传统优势专业，也是我国综合性大学中开设最早、最具影响的农林经济管理专业。
该专业主要培养农业与食品产业领域的实用型经济管理人才，特别注重培养既具备国际经济知识、掌握国际贸易规则和惯例，又熟悉中国农业、食品产业与农村实际，既掌握农业与农村经济制度与政策，又具备涉农企业管理能力的综合型人才。该专业毕业生要求系统掌握经济学与管理学的基本理论和方法，具备与农业、食品产业有关的国际经济与贸易、企业管理与宏观经济管理等方面的专业知识与技能，熟练掌握与运用计算机和一门外国语。从第三学年开始，可以从计划设立的“产业经济与贸易”、“食品经济与管理”两个专业选修方向中选修一个方向.该专业毕业生社会需求包括：（1）在与农业、食品产业有关的金融、投资、商业流通、国际贸易、生产加工、科技开发、咨询服务等企业从事经营管理工作；（2）在与农业、食品产业、农村等有关的政府综合部门和专业部门从事宏观经济管理；（3）在有关的高等院校、科研机构从事教学和科研工作。

林业经济管理专业介绍:
2000年获得农林经济管理一级学科学位授予权，在原来招收农业经济管理专业的基础上，具备了招收林业经济管理专业的硕士和博士研究生的资格。2001年开始与国家林业局合作招收林业经济管理专业的硕士研究生。本硕士和博士专业在国内同类学科中具有明显优势，享有较高学术地位和一定国际影响。本系教师早在20世纪80年代中期就开始从事相关方面的教学和研究工作,经过长期努力，现已积累了良好的研究基础，并已培养出一支实力雄厚、合作默契、具有创新精神的学术队伍。

Doctor of Forestry Economics & Management 本专业博士学位主要培养林业经济管理方面的教学科研管理人才。学生通过3年的课堂学习和科研项目的研究实践，对林业经济核心理论有深入了解和掌握，并具备将相关知识理论广泛运用到现实教学和科学研究实践中的能力。主要研究方向：林业理论与政策、社会林业、林业可持续管理。
本博士专业学制3年，第1年主要参加课堂学习，主要学习高级微观经济学、计量分析方法等相关课程；第2-3年，学生主要确定研究题目，在导师指导下撰写开题报告，并进行相关的论文课题研究，最后完成毕业论文。
