By Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald(1896－1940),the author of The Great Gatsby，was one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century.His novel is a vivid reflection of the 1920s “American dream” shattered, showing the American upper cla “Wasteland age” spiritual face of the Great Depreion.He established his position in the history of modern American literaturefor The Great Gatsby whichwas written in 1925.The novel,The Great Gatsbyis set in modern American society upper middle cla in 1920s.1920s in the history of USA is a short and specific period and known as the “American hustle and bustle”.In this particular era,the United States created the miracle of the “Coolidge boom times”.American hedonism, Spencer's theory of evolution and James's pragmatism philosophy became very popular in the United States.And the novel The Great Gatsbythus began the story at the acquaintance of Nick and Gatsby in Gatsby’s luxury house.Nick was very interested in Gatsby.After a period of time,he found that there's a deep inside of Gatsby with a girl named Daisy.Young Gatsby as a lieutenant commander was not very rich.He and Daisy fell in love.Then World War I broke out, Gatsby was transferred to Europe.Daisy therefore broke up with him,she turned and came from a wealthy man named Tom.And they married.However,Daisy’s married life was not happy because Tom has a mistre.And Gatsby was in agony, he is convinced thatmoney to let Daisy betrayed him and determined to become a millionaire.A few years later, Gatsby finally succeeded.He wanted to draw Daisy's attention, to restore the lost love.Nick was moved by Gatsby's infatuation.Hevisited Daisy and told her about Gatsby's mind.Then Gatsby and Daisy met finally and Gatsby naively thought Daisy still loved him.However, Daisy had changed a lot.She just treated their relationship as a stimulus.At once,Daisy drivea car, ran over and killed her husband's mistre.To protect Daisy, Gatsby aumed the responsibility to drive.Daisy,on the contrary,under Tom's provocation, causethe mistre's husband shot and killed Gatsby.At last,Gatsby completely become a victim.Gatsby didn't believe Daisy had faithle,still pursuit rekindle old dreams..When people are holding a funeral for Gatsby,Daisy and her husband was already on the road traveling in Europe.Nick saw the human reality of hypocrisy, then, away from the city, and return home with a sort of tragic mood.The novel reveals a cruel truth that the bottom surface of the characters represented by the Gatsby developed into the upper claes of society, but in fact they are really hard to become upper cla people.Gatsby's death,just shows cautionary tale of the decadent downside of the American dream.And Daisy, love wealth better than the pursuit of loveDaisy's selfish, indicate that the ”American Dream" is not realistic, as well as the blindne of the pursuit.It also delves into themes of excees of the rich, and recklene of youth.
