母亲虽从未笃信过任何正统的宗教，但她自有其终生不渝的信仰：她相信爱，相信自然的神奇，相信生活的美好。一旦有机会降临，她总会珍视这二度生活的机遇；这一点特别表现在她垂暮之年还在为联合国儿童基金会工作。
尽管生活的磨砺慢慢使我们如同披枷戴锁，但有时一次濒死的经历就足以让我们从这些枷锁中解脱出来。我们逐渐认识到什么东西值得孜孜以求，什么不值。虽然她不记得童年濒死的经历，但对于濒死的认识，一旦种植在她那天性谦让的肥沃的土地上，便扎下了谦卑的根须，这根须美化了她整个人生。
