Martin Luther King, Jr.Martin Luther King, Jr.(January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968)was one of the pivotal leaders of the American civil rights movement.King was a Baptist minister, one of the few leadership roles available to black men at the time.He became a civil rights activist early in his career.He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott(1955–1956)and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference(1957), serving as its first president.His efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his ―I Have a Dream‖ speech.Here he raised public consciousne of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S.history.In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means.After Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to yield her seat on a bus to a white paenger in December 1955, the Montgomery Improvement Aociation was organized, with King as president.He was not sure that pursuing a boycott of the bus system was morally correct until he remembered a statement by Thoreau: “We can no longer lend our cooperation to an evil system.” On the evening of December 5, King made what he later considered the most powerful speech of his life.He iued what was a call to all of those who believed in equality that the time had come for resistance to racist policies.King proposed a series of civil rights campaigns aimed at regulating hiring practices and eliminating segregation in all public facilities.He organized protests and traveled and lectured widely and was arrested more than fifteen times.During March and April of 1963, he led a ma protest in Birmingham, Alabama, to appeal for fair hiring practices and an end to segregation.After defying court orders barring public demonstrations, King was jailed for five days.In 1963 King worked with Ralph Abernathy, his deputy and later the one who replaced him as president of the SCLC, and other leaders, to organize the largest civil rights demonstration in the United States history.On August 23, approximately 250,000 civilians staged a march on the capital, Washington, D.C., for freedom.It was almost like a military invasion.They—black and white as well as all other races—stretched over a 10-acre area and acted as witnees to civil rights laws that were being voted on in Congre, putting preure on those in the Senate who would otherwise vote against those laws, like Republicans representing southern states.On that day, King gave his glorious speech to tell the world of his faith in the brotherhood of man.In his speech, known by the slogan, I Have a Dream, he expreed his hope that freedom would become a reality for all people in God's great kingdom.In July of the following year, he was invited to the White House by President Lyndon B.Johnson to witne the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.The

legislation made segregating blacks and whites in public facilities, as well as discriminating in hiring practices, working conditions, and wages, against the law.Later that year, King was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize for Peace.On April 4, 1968, King was shot and killed as he stood on the balcony of his second-floor room at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis
