Te of the d’Ubervilles(the second part of the book reporting)

Backgound(写作背景):In the end of 19century,the UK was making its slow and painful transtion from an old-fashioned,agricultural nation to a modern, industrial nation.businemen or “new money”joined the ranks of upper social cla, however, some families of the ancient arisocracy,or “old money”faded into poor situation.Te’s familywas an example, her parents wanted to change theit life condition by means of losing themselves. Also,it was an remote cause of Te’s death. The purpose of writing(写作目的):the author Hardy showed his deep sense of sympathy for the UK’s lower claes, particularly for women such as Te.Hardy became famous for his compaionate including the women victimed by the elf-righteous rigidity of the UK’social morality at that time. This novel showed its readers a comparatively frank look at the sexual hypocrisy of the UK society.Main characters(主要人物)

Te Durbeyfield:The novel’s protagoist. She is a beautifu young lady living with her impoverished family in a small village in the UK.She has a strong sense of responsibility and is committed to doing the best she can for her family ,in spite of her lack ofexperience as well as the leading from her unwise parents. It makes her easily to be hurted. Her life is complicated after her father’s discovering of a link to the noble line of the d’Urbervilles.Te is sent to work at the d’Uberville mansion. She becomes pregnant by Alec d’Uberville. The most terrible thing is that Alec’s family don’t have any relation with d’Urbervilles.Alec’s father is a busineman named Simon Stokes, simply bought the name after he retired.Angle Clare:An intelligent young guy whose father and two brothers are all respected clergymen. But Clare’s doubts in religious have him from joining the ministry. He decided to become a farmer to preserve his intellectual freedom from the preueres of the city life.In the Talbothays Dairy,he meets Te and the two young guys auickly falls in love with each other.Alec d’Urberville:The son of the wealthy busineman named Simon Stokes. He is handsome but amoral. He is not really a d’Urberville—his father simply took the name of the ancient noble family after he built his mansion and retired.Alec is a manipulative and sinister young man who does everything he can do to cheat Te when she comes to work for his family. When he finally has his way with her in the wods,he tries to help her ,but he is unable to make her love him.Mr.John Durbeyfield:Te’s father,a lazy peddler in his village. He is naturally quick but nates to work. When he knows that he is the offsping of the d’Urbervilles,he is quidkly to make an attempt to profit from the connection.Mrs.Joan Durbeyfield:Te’s mother.Joan has a strong sense of belief that Te will live a happy life. She has particular hope for Te’s life. She is continually disappointed and huth by the way her daughter’s life actually is.But she is also somewhat simple—minded and naturally forgiving, and she is unable to remain angry with Te---particularly when Te becomes her main means of support.Mrs.d’Urberville:Alec’s mother, the widow of Simon Stokes. She is blind and weak. She cares deeplier for her animals than for her son Alec her maid Elizabeth, and Te.In fact, she never sees Te as anything more than an impoverished girl.Marian,Izz Huett, and Retty Priddle:Milkmaids that Te makes friends with in the Talbothays Dairy. When Te was alive ,they keep close relationship.Although the girls are all love Clare, and they fell very upset when they know that Te and Clare is going to have a wedding, they still help

the couple and persuade Alec to forgive Te and give her another chance. The plot(情节):John Durbeyfiled is a poor peddler. When he know that he is the descent of an ancient noble family, the d’Urberville.Meanwhile,Te,his eldest daughter,is dancing with other girls in the village for the May Day dance, where Te exvhanges glances with a young man.Mr.Durbeyfield and his wife decide to send Te to the the d’Urberville’s mansion to find a lucky fortune. As a matter of fact, the Mrs.d’Urberville dosen’t have any relation to Te:her husband ,the busineman ,Simon Stokes, simply changed his name to d’Urberville after he retired. But Te dosen’t know the fact, and she has no choice but follow Alec’s order to take care of the poultries in the mansion.Te blames herself for an accident involving the horse ,which is the only means of income.Te spends several monthes working in the mansion, she has to resist Alec’s attempts to seduce her. Finally,Alec takes advantage of her in the woods one night after a fair.Te knows that she dosen’t like Alec,so she go back home sadly, monthes later, she give birth to Alec’s baby, she named the baby “Sorrow”.Sorrow was dies soon after he was born. After spending the miserable year in her own house, Te decide to go out to find a job.In Talbothays,Te enjoys a period of happine as a milkmaid with other three girls--Marian,Izz Huett, and Retty Priddle. She also meets a young guy named Clare, who turens out tobe the man from the May Day dance at the beginning of the novel. The two young guys fall in love with each other. And eventually, she accepts Clare’s proposal of the marriage. She thinks she should tell her past to Clare. So she writes a letter, however,Clare dosen’t get the letter. After their wedding, the couple tell each other about their errors.Clare says that in London, she has an affair with an older lady.Te also tells him the history with Alec.Te forgives Clare, but Clare cannot forgive Te.He gives her a large number of money and boards a ship bound for Brazil, where he thinks she can establish a farm.He tells Te that he will try his best to forgive her past, but he also warns her not to try to find him until he comes back for her.Small summary(小总结):Te’s story may be a “standard”story, representing a deeper and lager experience than that of a single individual. In the past,Te represents the changing role of the agricural worker in the UK in the late ninnteeth century. She is in between, both socially and culturally. Thus,Te is a symbol of unclear and unstable notions of cla in nineteenth—century the UK,where old family lines retained their earlier glamour, but where cold economic realities made sheer wealth more import than inner nobility. And as for Clare ,when he awakens to the actual complexities of real—world morality after his failure in Brazil, and only then he realiaes that he has been unfair toTe.His moral system is readjusted as he is brought down to Earth.Ironically,it is not the angel who guides the human in this novel, but the huaman who directs the angel, although at the cost of her own life.外语系09级2班 司海若2009710212
