英国国家档案馆8月1日解密一批文件，包括一份为女王伊丽莎白二世撰写、涉及第三次世界大战爆发的演讲稿。
这篇演讲稿由英国政府官员撰写，是为1983年春天一场模拟第三次世界大战的军事演习所准备。演讲稿写道：“我们都知道，今天我们面临比历史上任何一个时期都要大的危险……战争的疯狂如今再次席卷全球，我们的国家必须再次准备好，迎接巨大挑战。”
演讲稿中，伊丽莎白二世还回忆第二次世界大战爆发时场景，“我从未忘记，1939年二战爆发时，我和妹妹在收音机旁听父亲(乔治六世)讲话时那种悲伤和严肃……我从未想过，这种悲伤和庄严的责任有一天会降临在我身上”。
按美联社的说法，女王或许从来没有看过这篇演讲稿。英国政府官员之所以会在1983年为她准备这篇演讲稿，是因为当时正值“冷战”最充满敌意的时间段。那一年，时任美国总统罗纳德·里根称苏联为“邪恶帝国”，美国在欧洲部署巡航导弹。
